My best friend has a lake house on 3 Mile. They are all over the place. It’s one of the only ducks I’ve never killed.

Fact! I can’t go duck hunting without a “spotter”.

Now that I've slept on this, I realize our mallards are nowhere to be found.

On any given day the lagoons in Audubon Park are holding at least 25,000 of these. Probably a lot than that. Incredible numbers.

Dumb as a box of rocks and eat like wood duck. Had hundreds of them near my house in Houma. Be warned they still counts in your 6 duck limit even though they don’t migrate and are non-native.

I hadn't duck hunted in years but a buddy invited me to a place in SW LA this past season. We had a limit of these things in 30 minutes. I couldn't reload the shotgun fast enough or it would have been 10 minutes at most. Cleaned them and got them in the freezer. Figure they are going in a gumbo or sauce piquant later on.

They will literally come in, get shot, and with a few whistles, they come back for more. Limit is like other brown ducks (Greys, Widgeon, Teal) and they are hands down the best eating duck. Better than teal and imo, better than Woodrows too. They have been known to find deer feeders and stuff themselves with corn which might further add to their flavor.
All true. Maybe a widely known fact but they stay in family groups their whole first season, so you kill momma and they will damn near try to land on her. Not only that, they band in nests..so if you get into a banded set you can kill multiple bands outta one group, we had 4 out of one group in the past. All sequential numbers.

And yes, they are great to eat. Word is that the Duck Festival gumbo winner was tree duck for many of the winners lately.

There was some discussion on whether or not to include a "special bag limit" on these birds during the Special Teal season. Ultimately; it was declined. But, I honestly believe it should be opened for further consideration. Let's face it; with plenty Newbies in the Waterfowler game now, plenty of these birds get whacked in Teal season already.

We called them Mexican whistlers when I would see them on the West Bank in the refineries. Always wanted to eat one

I can see how Woodrows would get popped during Teal Season by Newbies, and maybe more so, Hollywoods are legit collateral damage during Teal since they actually fly together. However, if you mistake a Whistler for a Teal you probably need to quit duck hunting or get railroaded by Greenjeans without lube.

But there should be a special season for them. They are simply too invasive.

Yeah, apparently a lot of people have been trying to get these thrown into the teal season. I've seen them in public but never shot one, but if they are such good eating ducks, then we should be thankful for so many I suppose.

Dumb ducks hang around my back yard by the river. If I whistle in high pitch, they will walk toward me.

They have gotten thick in Shreveport.

I used to see 100's of woodies right before dark. Now I see a few woodies, and hundreds of tree ducks each night.

They are tasty. Hell to pick, I skin them. Big legs for a duck. And they are about as much fun to shoot as a fish in a barrel.

I imagine at some point there might be a special season like they do with resident Canada Geese in certain areas. They are just like them honestly, since I would call them more adaptable than invasive. They really give zero shites about interacting at close quarters with humans and actually thrive in urban environments just like Canada Geese do. When they start competing with other ducks for nesting or start really fricking shite up on golf courses then you might get a special season but not sure if that is the case with them or not.
