Black Bellied Whistler. I get them in my backyard all the time. They make a cool sound.

They're a 6 per day bag limit duck, if that tells you anything. I've heard a lot of people complaining about them becoming more prevalent in LA though. Something about competing with wood ducks and messing with their reproduction.

Thanks y'all. I'm a fisher not a hunter.
I'm always impressed by people that know what type of duck is flying 200' in the air.

Had a group of 20 that had been working the area here in South Ga pitch in at the tail end of wood duck hunt and we flared them. We have been seeing them for the last 3 years throughout most of the year. I’ve taken several videos of them with their yearly offspring.

Mexican whistling ducks. There’s about 200 of them in the pond across the street from my house and they never shut up

They are pretty thick in SE Texas and SW LA. They are generally dumb as a box of rocks initially but they either wise up quick, weed out the dumb ones, or migrate at the first hint of cold weather although you can still catch them in neighborhood ponds and golf courses in the Winter. We usually beat them up pretty good on a few spots on the openers of South and then North zone in Winnie, TX in the rice. They will literally come in, get shot, and with a few whistles, they come back for more. Limit is like other brown ducks (Greys, Widgeon, Teal) and they are hands down the best eating duck. Better than teal and imo, better than Woodrows too. They have been known to find deer feeders and stuff themselves with corn which might further add to their flavor.
