I'm certainly not going to talk the guy out of going get one but mine will be elk hunting with me. I do think .338 win mag is the ultimate general purpose kill everything in North Merica Caliber and everybody should have one.
OP, either your 7 mag or .30-06 with good bullets would be perfect for moose. If you want to buy a rifle, either a .338 win mag or 375 h&h would be a good step up from what you've already got. 300 win mag is a fantastic do-it-all as well, but you've already got .30 Caliber covered. Step up to mid bore for ultimate fu

I know of some natives that use .223, but really only out of necessity rather than preference
Thy use 223 for seal and otter around here. They are allowed to hunt, as those are traditional.

I personally used .308 (165 grain)
I tend to work through moose season because everyone else is off hunting. Most of my coworkers use 308 or 270.
Personally I’d keep a sidearm for bear. I understand the ballistics of a slug, but it seems people that carry shotguns seem to have them laying down instead of with them too often.
Should probably add that many of us can’t just get in a car and drive to the store for ammo. Having a caliber that’s pretty common helps with finding ammo (usually). I get to town 4-5 times a year and usually end up just using what I can find unfortunately.

I don’t know how many families here would survive without moose meat. Elders especially benefit from it because most hunters give meat to elders and families that have lost a family member.
One of the really impressive things about Alaska is the subsistence program and how much it is supported here.

Yep! I also made sure I had bear tags too just so I wouldn't have to fill out any paperwork if I shot a bear during moose season. Paperwork for shooting bears is a pain if its a case of self-defense.

That's primarily why I went with a 308, easier to find ammo because most people where I was at shot 30-06 or 7mm. Never had an issue with find 308 rounds...
Shotguns shells were a different story...had to time those right and buy them by the pallet...usually well before spring bird hunt.

You asked for caliber not cartridge so my answer is .30

same. You're probably like me here, can't get ammo shipped so you have little option but to buy whats on local shelves.

Between the 7 mag and the .30-06, I’d take whichever shot better.

30-06
Or any of the .308 derivatives with 150g+ bullet.

Do you have a trip planned, or is this all hypothetical?
If so , share some details , we might be able to help you

Is there much of an advantage, or disadvantage, from a .308 or a 30-06 where you can go 150 gr or 180 gr, vs. a 300 WM? If there is potential for longer shots and I'm shopping a new rifle that can do anything, what about 300WM?

30 06
I would leave the 7 mag at home.

Why? 7 mag with a hood 175gr bullet would be a fantastic choice.
