I went to Lowe's yesterday as the fire ants are in the cracks on my patio. We are semi-suburban with a lot of land between us and the next house, so I know I'm not going to eradicate them as there is a few acres of woods behind us.

But what I don't get is that you can buy $15/1 pound solution or $4/ 5 pounds of solution.

I understand the $4 for 5lbs is probably an inferior solution but what am I getting for the upgrade?

I bought both this time and going to try my own experiment.

I use the big jug of Amdro granular from SAMS.

Treatment last about a year. By spot treating and not doing the whole yard, 1 jug last a couple of years on a 1/4 acre lot.

I noticed this weekend it's time to get back in the fight.

I use Amdro on ant piles in the yard and gas or used motor oil when they pop up in joints in the sidewalk or driveway.

Bottle of Dawn soap and H2O. Pour from a cup/container or use sprayer. Not much to gain trying to treat large areas. JMHO.

Amdro usually works well for me around the house. I have 17 acres (7 that I maintain and 10 that is woods.) and I can generally keep them at bay around the house at least.

Best I've seen is Bayer Top Choice.

But it's expensive. 50lbs bag is close to $200

I spray talstar when I think about it.

I put down talstar granules twice a year.

I haven’t noticed a huge difference in killers they all seem to work. I buy the cheap stuff and throw on mound and broadcast a cup or so around the area.

My ants don’t make big mounds. Little mounds about grass high or under. Little crazy mean bastards.

Suffocates them. Also happens that the mixture will help break down the scent trails they use. It's a contact kill, not residual like your typical insecticides.

Talstar here in Florida.
My house is surrounded by swamps and the only way they can get here in down my dirt road.
I spray the hills in my yard and wipe them out in the road before they get here..

Turner River Terror's house:

I use Amdro bait, it works better long term but isn't instant. If you have a kid's party this weekend and you need them gone fast, use the straight poison that you water in, but be advised they will be back in a couple weeks, with the poison you have to play whack-a-mole with the mounds.
