There are a few guys here that own a few nice rigs. It all comes down to what you want to do and the $$ in your pocket. Read up and find deals online. There are new and used deals out there. Read up on what ever item you plan to upgrade, prices vary.
My upgrades so far.
16" Wheels
315/75/R16 (35") BFG KM2 Tires
Terraflex spare tire carrier
Terraflex 2.5 coil lift
Bielstein Shocks
Daystar 3/4 coil spacers
Ace front bumper
Rock rails (free)
Up next will be to get rid of the painted fenders and adding new front and rear drive shafts

It never ends

Lots of them, people step into the jeep world all the time, spend a shite load of money and then realize its not for them. you can routinly find take off parts or whole built jeeps for crazy prices.

Yep, Wish I had the time to make a project jeep. One for the woods only. Using only used parts and such. Maybe one day when I have time and money

After I "finished" mine, One was selling on the forum for 35k, almost identical to mine sans the axles. I was a little pissed.

I have 2 4x4fs a f250 & a according to the ot a women's car a fj cruiser with a 6 sp mt. My first car was a cj5 but Hands down the fj will do anything I put it through. Wheeling whereas my truck is just too big. The 4 door jeep is great for passengers vs the fj but its just me & mrs cracker so back seat is not an issue but i have had people ride back there with no complaints. I ordered a rooftop tent like this set up for camping & hunting. Plus the resale on the fj is great.

I like the FJ but do not like how the rear door opens. The direction of opening. I wish it was more like a real door and not an extended cab style. Other than that I like the FJ

I wish Toyota would make a wrangler style vehicle

Good luck.

No one in my family has had any with Jeeps.

(but if you have one in college, it is a babe magnet)

Do I learn to drive a stick and buy a manual transmission Jeep, or would it be better to go with an automatic?

Auto, for sure.

If you wanna experience a standard transmission, the Jeep is gonna be pretty boring comparatively. That said, if you don't have a lot of heavy traffic it will be fine. Automatics are way easier to drive offroad. What years are you looking at? 2007-2011 Autos are gonna suck if you add 35s and you'll want to regear.

The only plus for you getting a Rubicon would be for resale. You wont need the D44, E-lockers and sway bar disconnect. If you do end up offroading heavily, those can be added for cheaper and a better quality than stock.

Manuals are very fun to drive, for about a month. Then you'll get sick of it.

Get an Auto.

I knew the concept of a standard.

That's really the key to it. If you have a mental picture of what's going on in the Bell Housing when you depress and release the clutch pedal it becomes a piece of cake to operate.

Good luck finding a standard, jeep wranglers tend to be automatics now. I personally drive a standard 2 door wrangler, of course I'm neither a woman or a Bama fan

They have a new Scrambler out now

Those are kits that the dealership has installed by Searchers. They don't come off the factory line like that.

Pick the Wrangler. You won't be disappointed. It's a very fun vehicle and it's the best time of year to own one. I love to take mine through the woods and mud, tailgating, and back it up to parade routes.

I agree with everyone that you need to learn how to drive a stick, but I think you'd be happy with an automatic or standard.

What model and top are you going to buy?

FWIW, learn to drive a stick. It will serve you well at some point.

Can I get an Amen?

Jeeps are fun with manual transmissions but I mainly want one in a road car once I have the cash. This is the main reason why the Cadillac CTSv is so appealing to me (car in my signature that I don't own yet). A 556hp sedan with a 6 speed manual. On the track, a manual is more fun and more involving. For an all-encompasing driving experience, you can't beat a manual. It sucks that almost all other sports car makers are going with boring autos.

That being said, a sports car manual is much more fun than a manual on a truck. But that is your call to make.

Towing with an automatic blows big time.

I hate automatic transmission.
