First vehicle I bought was a '93Jeep Cherokee. Put 213K miles on it. Great trucks. I now have a standard Wrangler and love it. Knowing how to drive a standard has been very helpful in trips to Central America where they are more common. Also helped with tractor driving.

Love my 6 speed JK but my next one here out will be automatic

Auto better offroad. Easier to hold beer and rifle when riding the roads at the camp as well

save a few grand for your mods. You will want them and better off to be prepared to spend the $$

Manual transmissions are fun to drive but, they suck if you drive in traffic frequently.

:kige:

I learned to drive a stick in a jeep at the camp when I was about 12. Put that thing in 4L and it just about won't go dead. This will help you get the hang of it for a while without all the jumping and shaking and engine dying etc. Of course don't do this 4L training on the pavement.

Everyone should own a standard once.

I've never owned a standard but I've always known how to drive one.

I learned on our John Deere 4020, that bastard has 16 forward gears.

Manual is funner to drive, and like said if you travel overseas that's pretty much all they drive. Surprisingly most cars up here in the Philly area are manuals, probably for driving in the snow and stuff.

I learned on a International pickup 1960 something model. And a ford soybean truck from the 50's or 60's. owned three since then. I love manuals.

Other than the Mrs not able to drive one.

The column shifts are certainly different. I learned that in a 68 Bronco.

Pow pow's truck. Learnt to drive it on the "back levee."

34 will know where I'm talking about.

3 gears.

I can still smell the smell of his pipe in that truck if I close my eyes.

Pick the Wrangler. You won't be disappointed. It's a very fun vehicle and it's the best time of year to own one. I love to take mine through the woods and mud, tailgating, and back it up to parade routes.

I agree with everyone that you need to learn how to drive a stick, but I think you'd be happy with an automatic or standard.

What model and top are you going to buy?

I'd really like a Rubicon, but I'm not sure I need to spend the extra $$$, or have a need for it.

Realistically, I will probably go with the Sahara.

I definitely want a soft top for the convenience, but I like the way the hard top looks. I'd like to find one that comes with both.

Buy Sport with tow package. You will save $$ for the mods that will follow and Sport package is pretty nice. Rubicons are pricy (rightfully so) as well as Saharas with their fancy cigarette lighters and such
Tow package will give you the better "Stock" gears that will work with larger tires. Even with these some people uprage the gears later on.

As I bought it

As it is now. Wish I had More $$ to do more

It's my understanding that sticks are better for serious off roading,

Maybe back in the day, when all the vehicles that were considered "off-road" pretty much only came stick or the auto was a POS.

in the current day, Auto's rule. go to an event, most will be Auto.

If you need any help on any mods or what is worth it on the stock heep, Ask. I can send ya in the right direction. I have done a thing or two to mine

As long as you have a pecker, you should be able to drive a manual
