I know a few people with them and they all love them. Like I said though, they have to be exercised.

oh no, don't get me wrong, they're great dogs.. just seemed more active than a lab usually is, and when my friend left the house for anything or any length of time, she would sit by the door and cry very loud

ridgebacks.. are you kidding me dude.. come on...

Huh?

I know a lot of folks with chessies.. .and do not know anyone that owns one that ever bit a person much less a kid...

I knew a guy who had one and it didn't take it long to bite somebody.

quote:

snarl when non-family member try to take a bird or cat from them.. .YES... but bite.. never... mine is an 85 lb female.. that if she doesn't like what you are doing -either she moves you.. .or herself out the way

frick that shite. I'd knock my dog's head clean off if he snarled at anybody who wasn't doing something to deserve it. Trying to take something from him is no grounds for him to snarl.

I'm not saying chessies are bad or anything, but I've been around one that bit, and I've always heard they bite. I'm glad you haven't had that experience. I like chessie's but I'll never suggest one for somebody with kids.

guys, thanks for all the suggestions and experiences.

whoever it was that suggested the vizsla, thank you. looking at this dog's videos, and reading their characteristics, i think i may have found my dog.

there's a breeder 25 miles from me. i'm going to try and set up an appointment to go visit them and check out their dogs.

My family has alway had a black lab to hunt with but I got a 9 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback just as a pet. Very, very pretty dogs.

Short hair: Yep
Large or medium/large: About 65 lbs now and probably be about 80 lbs
Intelligent and wants to play: good lord yes
Good temperament:Yep
Social/good with kids and other pets: very gentle with my year and half old nephew. He crawls all over her
Loyal: very
Good bark: only barks at what she thinks is a threat

If you read more about them, a "negative" about them is that they can become extremely loyal to you and your children. Sometimes being aggressive towards anyone approaching your home. Simply exposing them to all people fixes that problem

Slash, do ya'll have a problem with you dog jumping up and eating food off the counter? This bastard catahoula ate all of the hamburger steaks the other night. I about killed him.

Nope not off the counter but that sumbitch will take it out of my hand or out of my mouth if I'm not careful. I like to nibble on oreos and he'll jump in my lap and take them. It's my fault for teaching him that though. If we leave food out on the table or counters he will sit and stare at it until the cows come home.

Get a great dane. They are beautiful. Many people are turned off by their size, but they are lazy dogs and really gentle giants.

Tank does that too. He thinks he's sneaky like my 4yo thinks he's sneaky. If he cant see you he assumes you cant see him. Kinda hard to miss an 80lb black catahoula. He'll watch you until you turn around and turn the trash over or steal the plate entirely.

Downshift....

One robins egg don't make it springtime

Snarl being the chessie smile....not a true snarl...if you been around enough chessies you know what it is....

I am willing to bet. On. % basis far fewer chessies bite than labs and most other breeds

South Louisiana Vizsla Club

If you are getting a dog from one one of the breeders in the club, have your ducks in a row, they screen very hard. It is not like buying a lab...

Get a Poodle. I'm not joking. I have 2 black standard poodles. Short haired, never shed, 2nd most intelligent dogs, great temperament, great with kids, very athletic and playful, love meeting people and other dogs, extremely loyal.

We had our newest one, Sophie, trained by the woman that does our bird dogs and now she only takes food, goes outside, gets on furniture, etc if we tell her she can. She's amazing.

This is Claude (9)

This is Sophie (1)

Both:

Trust me bro, awesome dogs.
