Two of friends have rhodies. One of them has kids and the dog is excellent around them. Dixie is over 120 lbs. she's lazy as shite though but that might because of the family.

I like rhodesians. This was going to be my suggestion. My vet has one (I was working for her when she got him) and he was always laid back. She had a young daughter and cats and never had any problems w/ him. I think he's about 100 lbs if that much. He still remembers me when I go to the clinic. I was the only one that could get him hyped up and he still gets excited to see me. And his "hyped up" lasts maybe 5 min. And I think they are beautiful dogs. Also...he was submissive to the rat terrier...

Will it be permanently outside? Or, inside at night?

For the qualities you have listed I would recommend a Vizsla. But you have to give them exercise and attention or they will drive you crazy.

Both inside and outside. Sleep in the house for sure. At the foot of the bed or in his kennel. It will most definitely be kennel trained.

The Goldie we had when I was little was a mix. She had short coarse hair and was the best dog ever. If I could find one like that again, it would be a no brainer. That's why I was looking at the chessy's.

Theres a good chance a chessy will bite somebody. I like em but they're not kid dogs. They don't usually handle bullshite very well.

Ridgebacks are great dogs. Just like anything though, you have to raise it right. They are big enough and strong enough to hurt somebody. My buddy has one that's about 120lbs. Great dog but i wouldn't want to piss him off.

I'm getting a boykin in March and everything I have read/heard says they are great dogs. Here's a thread I started about them a couple months ago you might want to check out: LINK

Of what you asked about my first recommendation as several on here have said would be a Lab.

I have a 9mth old british yellow lab that I and my wife and kids adore. He just wants to please. I'm training him to be a duck dog but he is a family dog first. He's great with the kids and with our other pets as well (cavalier king charles spaniel and 3 cats).
I think if you got one you would be extremely pleased with one.

Next would be a weimaraner. The main thing with a weimaraner is that the breed needs exercise.

Next and probably equal with the weimaraner would be a vizsla. They are really great dogs and somewhat similar to a weimaraner though smaller in stature.

I have 2 german shorthairs. They have made great family dogs. While they are a bit rambuctious as a puppy they have done well in a family enviroment. We lived in an apartment for a year with them and they did ok. They do like to be out and about, but mostly they are very social. They like to be around people, espicially the owners. They are very even tempered, easy to train, and they get along good with other petss. I have had a few over the years, and have noticed they do better with a full time mate. My 2 cents.

BS on the chessies... they take a lot of crap from the folks they know and love... it's other dogs that sometimes steer them afoul....

ridgebacks.. are you kidding me dude.. come on.....

I know a lot of folks with chessies.. .and do not know anyone that owns one that ever bit a person much less a kid...

snarl when non-family member try to take a bird or cat from them.. .YES... but bite.. never... mine is an 85 lb female.. that if she doesn't like what you are doing -either she moves you.. .or herself out the way...

that meanness in chessies was/is a myth perpetuated by stories of market hunters dogs a hundred or more years ago....

are they loyal to a fault.. yes...

are they territorial....yes....

isn't that what a dog is supposed to be?

they are by and large.. much calmer and more laid back than labs....and I know 200 times more people bitten by labs and goldens than i do chessies...

biggest knock on chessies... they are very unlikely to "listen" to people they do not know.. and do not know well.. will outright ignore them...

fwiw.. I have been bitten by two dogs.......

Mine came from cattle stock. He's a little over sized to be a house dog. Parents had great temperment from what the breeder told me. I know the guy, not great but well enough to trust what he says. He's energetic with the kids and me but takes it easy with my wife. He's pushing 80lbs at a year old. Also, mine is very social with the people we have over. We are always having cook outs, birthday parties, etc and after he calms down from the excitement of new people he's great. Except when it comes to sneaking food. You gotta watch your plate around him. As far as being social with other animals I'm not sure about Tank. We go walking down the street while the kids ride their bikes and he's on a leash or the electric collar (greatest thing ever for his stubborn arse). One of the neighboors up the street has wiennie dogs and they make quite a fuss when we walk by. Those are the only dogs he's had a conflict with. I chalk that up to trying to protect the boys though. He socialized with my aunts English Mastiff when they were puppies but hasn't seen him in a while.

They are pretty, but my experience with them, they are very territorial and somewhat beligerent. They dont play well with other dogs, and they are somewhat spastic for a while before they settle down.

to the OP - have you looked into boxers or golden retreivers?? i've had both (a boxer now) and they have both been great breeds of dogs.. the boxer has a little more energy than my goldens did when he got older, but very easily trained..

i have pics of my dogs if interested
