Walmart Inc. will stop selling some types of ammunition and ask customers to not openly carry firearms in its aisles in the wake of two deadly shootings in its stores that pressured the nation’s largest retailer to alter its gun-sales policies.
The company will discontinue sales of short-barrel rifle ammunition such as .223 caliber and other sizes that can be used on assault-style weapons once it has sold through its current inventory commitments, it said in a statement to employees Tuesday. It will also stop offering handgun ammunition after it has sold through existing inventory. In addition, Walmart will end handgun sales in Alaska, the only state where it still sells them, and is “respectfully requesting” that shoppers not open-carry guns in states where it’s permitted.

McMillon, who called himself a gun owner in the statement, also reiteratedhis call for Congress to debate an assault weapons ban and said background checks should be strengthened. He said he’s sending a letter to the White House and Congress on Tuesday “that call for action on these common sense measures.”

Presented without comment.

What about .223 caliber for long barreled rifles, say 16 inches or so?

They must not be making a ton of money off of these items. I actually wasn't aware that Walmart still sold guns and ammo.

You know how I know someone that doesn't know a thing about guns wrote that release?

do folks think that if they ban assault weapons then the 3 or 4% of gun deaths caused by them will not be caused by some other type of weapon? the violence won't go away because you took one tool away
any gun gone... is a win for the left.

Actually, per their prior press release, they have a decent market share of ammo sales. Like 20% of the market. This takes them down to about 6-9% per their release. So they are putting their money where their mouth is.

I tried to search for a gun this weekend on their site, and you would swear they don't even carry the brand.

Walmart tends to have 9mm range ammo for pretty cheap.
Online can beat them if you buy in bulk.

However, I suspect online is aware of that, and intentionally prices just a hair lower, to make it worth your while. And now that this won't be an option, online might bump up a bit, and still beat most local prices.

And for those who don't have the online option (Cali, etc), this could be bad.

Just bought $200 worth of it.

Might go back this weekend if there’s any left.

It worked well for K-mart when they stopped selling ammo after Columbine. Not only did it save countless lives, but look at how well they're doing now.

Walmart is too big for them to go bankrupt over ammo. At least in my mind.

Buying from Walmart was always a last resort. At least in my area, it takes an act of God to actually get someone to the gun counter, and then it’s like winning the lottery if they actually have a key to the case.
