Damn battery exploded while fishing PAC today. I knew one of the batteries was going bad cause I didn’t have much power to trolling motor, even after I cleaned all terminal connections. Anybody experience this?

Had it happen to me a good while back. All I could come up with was maybe it was low on water and arced across the cells inside. Sounded like a gun shot.

No, I also didn’t take the kayak all the way out to the bayou only to realize I left the paddle at home today either

Yes, I had one on a trickle charger that did not cycle down when the battery was full so it ended up burning off all of the water in the battery. I had unplugged it a few days before a trip then when I went to plug it back in the night before a trip it exploded the second the plug hit the extension cord. It blew acid all over my carport and onto the hood of my truck but luckily I had ducked down to plug it in so was unharmed except for ringing ears.

I missed it at the time but a good indicator is if you smell sulphur/rotten eggs be very wary of plugging your battery in.

Yeah years ago I had a car battery go the same way. Got in, turned the key, gunshot under the hood. I was just a kid so I bolted behind a tree to make sure the darn car wasn't going to explode. Open the hood and the battery is smoking with a hole in it.

I've also seen cordless drill batteries self-immolate. Started stinking really bad and billowing smoke. Was maybe 90 days old.

Aren't the lead acid ones designed to vent? What are the physics of this happening?

dont underestimate the need to fully neutralize that acid

even in a glass boat there are wires and things that the acid will eat right through and cause endless issues later on.

scrub it down good everywhere you can reach, then put plug in boat and fill all void areas you cant reach with soapy water and let sit overnight, then flush it all out and let it air dry

Had one blow while charging. Left for work that morning and garage smelled a little eggy. Didn’t put two and two together until I came home that evening and the vent caps were on the floor next to the boat. It blew them off and tore a hole in the side of the battery. Happened about three years ago. Up to that point battery showed no signs of a problem.

Flushed the hell out of the bilge with water and water / baking soda mix. Still killed my bilge pump and live well circulators. Had to replace all three cartridges.

Had one go boom inside the engine compartment of my go-fast boat early one morning while it was in the hoist. Pretty sure it shook the whole place, it certainly did on the part of the dock next to the boat where I was standing. Guessed being on the charger for a week and a completely still morning were to blame, I always lifted the hatch while charging so it wouldn’t do that.

I am not a scientist but I found a bunch of examples on other forums like the hull truth where people had the same experience I did, some even with the same charger.

Probable cause might have been battery low on water causing gases to build and ignite from an arch out. Purchased two new batteries and trolling motor runs fine now. Wash area near batteries good with soap and water to rid of any acid from explosion.

Long story but yes.

My Dad and uncle were fishing at toledo bend with my uncle's son in law. My Dad and uncle were in my Dad's boat and son in law was going to fish in my uncle's boat.

Uncle's cranking battery was dead. Called my uncle who told him he had jumper cables in his truck, to jump the battery off and load the boat back on the trailer.

Uncle didn't tell him the jumper cables were homemade and it was their first use. My uncle had accidentally wired it as the ground on the red side and the hot on the ground side.

If you are familiar with toledo this happened at Holly Park. Boat was on the bank on the south side, my Dad and my uncle were fishing the sunken bridge in patroon. When son in law touched the battery with those cables they heard the explosion loudly all the way at the sunken bridge.

My uncle said it was weird as soon as he heard it he knew exactly what happened. They hauled arse over there and he was ok, just had holes all in his clothes and skin was really red all over where the acid got on his skin. Luckily he had sunglasses on and none got in his eyes.

My uncle said on the ride back over there he just knew he was going to have to tell his daughter he killed her husband with stupid homemade jumper cables.
