Trailer Sway

I have a 20 foot double axle trailer and when towing two side by sides there is a lot of sway. Most everything I read says to add more weight to the tongue to help but my side by side is pulled up as far as it will go. Anyone ever dealt with this?

loading is probably the issue, but I would try a load distribution hitch

Does one side by side weigh more than the other? If so swap them around and see if that helps.

They are both about the same, I’m going to back one on next time since most of the weight is in the back of it.

Any weight you can add to the front will help. If you carry loaded ice chest in your truck bed, move them to the trailer around the first loaded sxs.

Backing both of them on would probably be your best bet. That would put more weight on the tongue and over the axles.

Back one up to the front of the trailer, and put all of your gear close to the tailgate in the bed

Odds are the main culprit is that second SXS sitting so far back. That one should definitely be backed on to get the rear end over the trailer axles. Get more weight over the trailer axles or in front of them should help. You might also check your trucks stabilizer bar and end links. Might have some worn bushings. Could always upgrade that.

This video will give you an excellent visual of why you need more weight on the tongue.

I saw an "IN TOW" guy pulling a truck and a car last week get ridiculously squirrelly on Hwy 90. He had the last car whipping back and forth perpendicular to the road. I thought for sure he was gonna lose it, but he managed to straighten it out

If ya do this often enough invest in a 3 point hitch those bars on each side are called sway bars

Yeah they both have the engine more to the rear of the machines so I do believe the tongue is light. We hauled it over 1200 miles and had a few scary incidents so we will load differently in the way home.

What is your tow vehicle? Is it rated for the load you are towing?

I have always used an anti sway bar but very often have found the culprit to excessive swaying to be as simple as too little air pressure in trailer tires.

May need tires with higher load rating.

We had one but had to use someone else’s trailer for the length and the one we had wouldn’t work.

If you are tail heavy the last thing you want is a weight distributing hitch. It will only make the arse end of your truck lighter. If you have a 1/2 ton truck it should squat at least 3-4 inches when towing 2 SxS’s
