My brother in law contacted me about a .270 howa with a nice scope about 2 years ago that someone was selling. I bought the setup for $300. Recently the seller has contacted him and asked what it would take to buy it back from me as it was his dads and he now regrets selling it. I feel for him and his personal connection to the gun but I also have a personal connection as it was the gun I used to kill my first deer.

What would you do?

Sell it back to him. He could have been in a weird place if his Dad had passed away. Now that he has had time to think about it he might be wanting it as a memory.

Having lost my dad just over a year ago I get it. I’d sell it back for what I purchased it for. Good Karma.

“Unfortunately I went on this canoe trip...”

Sell it back though. Dead Dad gun > First deer gun.

I don’t know the guy. Don’t know if his dad has passed or what the back story is or even why he sold it. Guess I’ll be selling it back. For sure if his father has passed.

His story about his dad may be BS. Thoroughly check that out. If true, I’d consider selling it back to him. It would mean more to him than to you. IMHO, of course.

If you doubt his story have him buy you a new identical setup and trade him

I hate to say it, but sell it back.

I do love lsuenvys idea. Trade him gun for gun, if he wants it back.

Sell it back to him. Unless your a child, the gun you killed your first deer with isn’t really that important unless the gun already had sentimental value

Ask him to replace it, buy you an identical combo and everyone wins. You keep a rifle and he gets that one back.

If OP wants to keep it bc it was the gun he shot his first deer with than a trade doesn’t check that box. I’d sell it back and move on knowing I helped a son with a connection to his dad regardless if he is alive or dead. Hell if the dad’s alive it may be more important to the son as a way to be closer/connected before his old man dies.

Figure out what your 100% cost to acquire - if that is $300, I would offer it to him for $300.
