I've been a bowhunter for 25 years and before this season I had been fortunate to only lose one deer. This year so far I've lost a doe that I think I hit high and an 8 point that I'm thinking was a leg wound (possibly to a deflected arrow but I can't prove it). This has me thinking, is my eyesight which has always been good but starting to get less than stellar starting to fail me or is it the lack of time to shoot like I used to contributing to bad habits? Regardless, it has me thinking of switching over to a crossbow.
Anyone made this move and if so what brands should I be looking at and which ones should I avoid? Not wanting to go super cheap but not wanting to break the bank on a $3500 pkg either.
What sayeth the OB?

Are you older than 62 or handicap? If not, sounds like you just need to invest more time practicing and tuning your bow or quit

I have an Elite Synergy that I can stack arrows into a tobacco can sized circle with at 50 yards. I bought my wife a Mission Sub-1 Lite a couple of weeks ago. I haven't touched my compound since shooting her crossbow.

All I care about is alone time in the woods and meat in the freezer. I'm not really a trophy hunter, or someone that hunts a certain way just for the challenge though.

ETA: The Mission crossbow package plus broadheads was like $1600. It comes with an awesome scope, quiver, 3 bolts that I upgraded to Black Eagle Executioners due to grouping issues, a soft case, a tube of rail lube, and the cocking rope. It can also be decocked.

ETA this also: ignore the try hard comments you're bound to get. The guys saying you're a p***y for shooting a crossbow are the same guys that hunt out of weather-proof box stands over corn piles most of the time.

I bought one for my daughter 13 ( not taking a jab at you) It’s a ten point wicked ridge 360, 500-600$ with the accudraw. Makes it real nice and easy for a kid to cock it. It’s stacks arrows at 50yd and she killed a doe with it last year. The one draw back to it over some of the higher end bows is the width of it in a blind or trying to shoot out a window.
I shot a pig with it but I don’t use just cus it’s not the same rush as bow hunting and that pig proved it to me,,, at some point I may not be able to bow hunt and will gladly use one.

There are doctors for this.

This is a possibility.

Do what you want that's legal.

I'm sorry but this is the exact type of thinking we don't need in the outdoors today. We all need to spend more time practicing I'm sure but life happens.

I've killed deer with everything from high powered rifles to compound. Looking to build my first traditional bow this spring from lumber I've harvested by hand.

That said crossbow hunting has way more in common with compounds then it does with gun hunting. I would rather someone with limited practice time hunt with a crossbow than possibly give up hunting for 2 reasons.
1. You retain proficiency with a crossbow much better than with a bow. That means fewer injured deer.
2. We need all the hunters we can get right now.

If you're not comfortable shooting a bow anymore there isn't any shame in using a crossbow if it keeps you out in the woods.

There's a lot of bowhunters who should be using them. I have one and I use it if I haven't been able to practice with my bow as much as I should.

This is what I have. No complaints. You could probably get faster for the money, though. LINK

So you are just an a-hole. Do you shoot a traditional bow? If not STFU about what he should shoot. Not like compound bows slinging arrows at 300 pfs is truly superior to someone going with a crossbow. The compound bow crowd can suck pricks like the fly fishing people. By the way i do not bow hunt, but hate to see pricks busting other hunters balls because you are superior for using a bow.

You should see the looks I get when I tell them I fish for bass and carp with a flyrod...

So as not to derail, I love my crossbow. Horton Storm I got at BP catalog return center for 250. You can get a good one pretty cheap if patient.

Ravin, if you feel like Spending the money it’s worth every penny. Been going back and forth on gettin the latest and greatest Mathews or just getting a ravin. My buddy has one and it will nail the bullseye consistently out to 65 yards

My shoulder started giving me trouble to where I couldn’t draw my DXT back. Switched over to a crossbow . Ended up getting a CAM procedure on the shoulder this summer and still recovering and doing PT. (Love going to the gym and having 75-yr old women out lifting me. Great for the ego) Hope it gets to the point where I can go back to the compound.

I got a Wicked Ridge Warrior. As much as I know about crossbows it does the job. It puts the bolt where I aim.

You don't have to spend a fortune. I have a $600 Barnett crossbow that works well. Buy local if you have an archery shop nearby. Ignore the haters.

Physically drawing a bow within 20-30 yards of an animal that lives and dies by being able to pick apart the slightest movement makes it considerably different than pulling a trigger at 50+ yards.

I couldn’t care less how anyone decides to legally shoot a deer, but a crossbow undeniably makes the entire process easier.

It’s going to sound crazy and i get looks all the the time BUT, try an ez-vee sight before you give up your compound. It was a game changer for me and is known to help people with poor eyesight. I absolutely love mine and will never go back to pins. And for the record, i have nothing against anyone using a crossbow, if it keeps hunters in the woods i’m all for it. I may give some guys at work a rash of shite jokingly but if it’s legal…. shoot it.
