If you’re looking, keep an eye out for used kayaks and call Massey’s to see if they have any demos for sale.

Any of y'all have fish finders on your kayak? I've always fished by just "having" spots but damn I'd like to be able to check my depth and put down some coordinates. What do I need to look for when buying one? I have the Predator 13 so I've read that Humminbird is set up to work well with it, if that actually matters.

I have an Lowrance elite Ti 5 mounted on a ram ball and wouldn’t want to be on the water without it
For me it’s not so much used to find fish but for dropping pins, tracking my route and depth (water temp also a bonus)
Don’t know much about the Hummingbird units but with Lowrance you add a “map card” that give you an updated satellite image
And if you spend anytime in the marsh is a must
If ya can I’d get a touchscreen unit, my 1st unit didn’t have that and can’t express how nice that’s to have on the water
Also remember the bigger the unit the bigger bat tree ya gonna need so if ya pull the trigger on the 12” screen you’ll need a car battery

I have the Lowrance Hook2 5”. Mainly use it for knowing depth and marking spots with GPS. I have it powered with the Nocqua battery and that thing will last at least 2 full days of fishing on a charge...maybe longer but 2 is the most I’ve done.

I have a dragonfly pro 4. Wish my screen was bigger but it’s a good unit.

I am not sure how the 13 is set up but if it’s like the PDL it can get a little tricky trying to install one. I have a lowrance Hook2 4x that I got for my old kayak. I would recommend going with the Raymarine or Humminbird.

I would also recommend getting the Hobie through hull wiring kit. It makes everything a breeze when installing.

No. Don’t need it. Overkill for marsh fishing in a kayak IMO. I have my phone and a printed map if I need to look something up.

I find it handy to have one for a depth finder in the marsh to be able to find the ledges where it drops from 2' to 5-6'

Agree. I'm rigged up for one, but almost never take it with me most places I fish. I usually only bring it when I go some place new.

I think it really depends on where you’re fishing sure if fish the same lake or pond it’s not a necessary
I couldn’t disagree more about it not needing in the marsh it tracks where you have been it’s gotten me out of some “where the hell am I” situations more than once
Couldn’t tell ya how many times buddies that don’t have one ask “hey man what’s the depth?”
Plus if you’re staring at your phone screen you’re not fishing but to each there own

I study where I’m going beforehand so I rarely have those moments, but if you get stuck a phone or a map accomplishes the same thing.

If I need to know the depth I just shove my anchor pole in the water (6’). If I don’t hit bottom, that’s enough info for me.

The best part of kayak fishing to me is the minimalist nature of it. I’ll strap on a trolling motor if I plan on exploring some new areas, but normally the only electronic is my phone.

Yep, it's not 100% necessary but it's a nice tool to have. I have a Google Earth overlay on mine so it's nice to be able to get a birds eye view of a new area, or know what's around that little island before I get there.

I would mostly use it for the maps, which you can also do on your phone in most places. It helps to know depths in the winter time, so you can find those deep holes and channels.

This is pretty much what I meant by what I said. After I’m familiar enough with a place I don’t bring it anymore. First couple of trips to a new place it is definitely good to have.

Until that phone puts the blue dot(you) as being out in the Gulf when you are deep in the marsh. First hand experience.

And the newer Hook2 units don't allow you to use personally made maps...now for $300...you can get one.

That's why I keep my older Hook and the Google Earth map I made for it.

Lol yeah that would suck, but I can see the cell tower from where I fish so that's never been an issue for me.

Good thing about kayak fishing is that you're never that far from where you started.

ETA: Hell, I don't take a GPS out at night when I go bowfishing. A phone and a map is good enough. I've got a GPS for it, just never installed it.

No doubt pretty sure we all do, but once you get on the water you’re never had to deviate from that original plan??
It happens pretty quickly
“oh man look at it pretty clean moving water well let me go up this cut 30 mins later
ok shite where am I at again!?”
I understand you have your phone, But doing all that unnecessary stuff just takes away from time fishing, just like taking out your anger pole to find depth a quick glance of the screen and I’m done

I’m not trying to bust ya balls man like I said to each their own but I’ve fished with it and without and would definitely rather have it

Or until you slip and drop a $700 phone in the water. I keep my phone in the middle storage hatch and take it out as little as possible because I'm afraid it'll eventually end up in the water if I have it out all the time.
