There a local trading site with a good deal on an Ocean Kayak tandem. I think I read that it can be fished solo as well. Worth the hassle? Not sure how much I'd use it, so not looking to drop a ton of $

I've been wanting to get a fishing kayak for a few years but haven't pulled the trigger.
We normally canoe on the buffalo or other shallow rivers around NWA but I've never used a kayak. What I'm not sure about is how a "fishing" kayak handles in shallow/rougher water? Are they meant more for open water like a lake?
I'd like to get a couple of tandems that would serve well for recreational floats and fishing as well, if that's an option. Been looking at FeelFree ever since I saw it posted on this thread a few years back.
Any thoughts or things I should consider? Basically do I need a separate kayak for fishing vs one for floating.

That drive will struggle in the marsh
How's that?
Because of how shallow the marsh gets. At least with Jackson the drive will kick up automatically when hitting something. The Old Town would worry me. With my Hobie I can raise the fins up and still operate it.

Natives kick up quite easily.

Look at all those red breasted spotted greengill sun perch.

Didn't mention Native because I wasn't sure. I personally wouldn't buy the Old Town simply because Pack and Paddle doesn't sell it. I would have to buy from Dick's. Yuk!

Cabela's sells Old Town

There are several fishing kayaks geared towards river fishing, but realistically most fishing kayaks around 12' will do the job.
The Old Town Predator MX (what I have), The Jackson Coosa, and the Native Slayer 12 XC are all fishing kayaks geared toward rivers and mixed use/small waters. The Native Ultimate 12 is a canoe/kayak hybrid that is completely at home in small rocky rivers as well. If you're coming from a canoe, it's your closest option and a helluva boat.
I have fished rivers in SE OK that are very similar to the rivers in NWA in my Predator MX and am very pleased with how it handles.
Predator MX and Native Ultimate 12
Decent idea of the rivers I'm talking about:
ETA: I'd be hesitant to get a tandem kayak for floating rivers. They won't turn as well as a canoe. They only one I'd consider is the Native Ultimate 14.5 Tandem. My buddy fishes all kinds of rivers in a solo Ultimate 14 so I imagine the tandem would be capable of it as well.

Predator PDL Angler looks pretty sweet.

I also like the WS Radar 135. The drive has a lever that easily raises it. N08 has one, but he's been banned. Lol

Has anyone fished Burns Point Park south of Centerville down highway 317? I am planning on fishing Saturday morning and I don't want to drive really far. Possibly a trip to Cypremort Point? Lefty, you interested?

I'd like to demo one. They have a large cockpit and tankwell which I like.
ManuFan,
We were talking about Crab Lady again. We'll watch the weather.

Thanks for the info. Yeah very similar to some of the water we go thru.
Good to know. The reason for a tandem is I have young kids that aren't old enough to handle a yak themselves. Even with the lack of maneuverability I figured a kayak would be more stable than a canoe and more enjoyable for them to ride in.

I am about 80% sure I am going to get one. It really depends on what I can get for my Compass. The only problem is that there are no dealers close by in case any warranty issues pop up.

Curious, why selling your compass so quick? Just came out right? Is the instant reverse the whole reason?

I liked fishing out of the PDL better and I think it will better fit my fishing needs. I am a trout fisherman so the little deeeper draft doesn’t bother me as I don’t like to chase Redfish.
Reasons for me wanting to switch:
- Instant reverse
- Less fatigue from peddling instead of the “pushing” motion of the mirage drive
- deeper hull sides and 36” width made it feel more stable. (I still feel confident standing in the Compass though)
- Sealed drive well. The PDL drive locks and seals the hull so there is no water intrusion.
- more comfortable seat
Reasons for hesitation:
- I just paid $2,500 for my other boat
- light weight of the compass is a huge plus
- no local dealers to provide service
- grass catching the propeller drive
