I’m in Folsom. I’m up to 10 species now since I moved here last year.

That’s pretty cool. Do you know how many are possible in the area? That would be cool to try to find them all.

Haven’t really researched it, but if they are here, I’ll find them.

Anyone recognize this little fella? He's the size of a large green tree frog but very bumpy. He also has a voice that is 100x his body size. We've got a pool (frog swamp) under construction and he likes hanging out around there at night.

Grey tree frog (Hyla versicolor) or Cope's grey tree frog (Hyla chrysoscelis) ? The two are only distinguishable by call.

I was leaning towards a Cuban Tree Frog, but the photos of all of the 3 are all over the place.

Toe pads didn't look quite but enough for. Cuban but it could be. Voice is VERY different between the natives and the Cuban though, that should give you your answer.

I'll have to try to find sounds from both. That little SOB is so loud. I was laying on my pool deck watching him the other night. His body doubles/halves in size when he croaks.

I caught a smaller one yesterday when weed-eating. He was hanging out in construction debris. I relocated him. Smoother and smaller with orange colors on his inside legs. Maybe totally unrelated but a light gray/parchment color.

Here ya go!
Frog Call lookup

Smaller with orange on the inner thighs = one of the natives (grey or Cope's grey tree frog)

Which then leads me to believe the one in your photo here is in fact a Cuban.

Thanks for the link. After listening, I'd say your first assessment was right. Sounds like the Cope's.

This seems like the right thread for this.

Two snakes in my backyard.

I’m not a herpetologist and I personally don’t like snakes.

Also have a new puppy who was playing and running back there about 5-6 feet away from them, thankfully, without noticing.

Quick guess on my part is they are not poisonous, but, again, not a herpetologist.

Someone want to identify?

I'm no pro, but my guess is rat snake. Definitely not venomous though.

Location needed for species level identification, but definitely rat snakes getting busy.

I agree on rat snake.

Caught me off guard when I saw them.

They are now under our deck, likely breeding.

Both probably 3ish feet in length.

Rat snakes by the way they kink their body and stiffen and their pattern. Have not see such yellow, tho. Good snakes to have around.

A few highlights from this past weekend:

A kid my son knows flew in from out west to herp with me from Thursday evening til Monday morning, and we also hooked up with another local kid for one of the mornings. We found and identified 53 snakes of 11 different species, and caught over 2 dozen (at least one of each species). I caught cottonmouths 5 days in a row and added the copperhead on the final morning.

Final total found last weekend:
2 kingsnakes
1 copperhead
20 cottonmouths
3 ring-necks
1 rough green snake
11 ribbon snakes
3 black racers
1 DeKay’s brown snake
1 glossy crayfish snake
9 broad-banded water snakes
1 diamondback water snake

Best single day was 25 snakes found. We could have caught most of what we saw, but after catching 5 broad-bandeds or 5 ribbons, you kinda lose interest in catching more of them. And I wasn’t grabbing 20 cottonmouths - keeping my 5-day streak intact was good enough. Best weekend of snake hunting I’ve ever had.

Absolutely love this thread.

Hatchling water snake that wandered into the shop a few weeks ago:

And just because he's awesome, 1.0 no white pied BP from my breeding stock:
