Yes, but wanton waste is not what I described. Taking a picture of your birds and discarding them the same way one would a breasted bird, is not wanton waste. It's waste but not illegal.

Correct. Wanton waste means you did not make an attempt to find the duck/deer/whatever

Once a deer or duck or fish is in your possession you can do whatever you want with it. Not saying it's right, but you can feed it to your dog or throw it in the trash. Not illegal

Why do yall care so much what someone does with the ducks they kill? As long as they are legal, I could care less if they eat them or just take a pic and dump them responsibly. A dead duck is a dead duck.

Probably just a troll but I'll bite.

This sentiment is a real thing. I hunted with a group of guys out of Venice a few years ago. I was invited and joined them on day 3 or 4 of a week long trip. After, the morning hunt we take the pictures of a 6 man limit and I see one of the guys throw the ducks in a recycing bin. I'm all about cleaning ducks later after a nap or even the next day if its cold. However, after the next morning hunt the same thing happens. Pictures then birds in a bin. That evening I go out to get the process started of cleaning the birds and one of the guys says man we're gonna have to dump those birds. I told the guy nah they're still good it was cold last night. When I look into the bin it's 5 days worth of ducks. I couldn't believe that shite. They were just gonna throw away a ton of birds... We did a bunch of smell checking, and I haven't really been invited back.

I find it morally wrong to kill something and not truly attempt to eat it. Shoot a bird that falls in the weeds, I'm going try to find it.

It's a class A misdemeanor in Texas if you fail to keep the deer in edible condition or fail to keep edible portions of the meat. You can't just throw away the entire deer. I would assume LA has very similar laws

I don't agree with it either but I am not going to say they don't deserve the same right to hunt as anyone else. I surely don't believe social media posts are a reason for a lack of ducks. If the instahunter didn't kill those birds someone else would be. You have to pay to play or put in work on some public land.

I think a lot of it has to do with decreased rice acreage.

A few decades ago rice was common all along the Texas gulf coast. Nowadays hardly anyone farms rice anymore. Mostly corn, cotton and milo.

Rice has actually made a come back in SE Texas. Once Lake Travis got full, the yuppies quit complaining about the rice farmers taking water from the LCRA and they started farming rice again in the El Campo area. Rice never really left the East side and lots of farmers that could not farm in the El Campo area just shifted to the East side and several ended up staying.

With that, geese have generally started filtering back to the coast.

The last time I logged into this board there were claims that New Orleans East had one of the best duck hunting areas in all of Louisiana. Did this change?

Richland and Morehouse are simply teal hunts now.

The mallards are gone. We get some pintails with the teal.

It is sad compared to the run we had from 1990 to 2001.

I agree our golden years are gone, but for some reason this year is just really bad. I know a few people that are doing pretty well, but for the most part people are saying this is the worst season they have ever had. I know people who have had great blinds in LA the last few years, and now this year it is awful for them. Even the people I know that have gone to Stuttgart said their duck numbers were really down this year.

I'm not even gonna pretend to some internet keyboard warrior but this pisses me off so much, I don't even have the words to express. Like wtf is wrong with people? You couldn't pay me enough money to hunt with those goons. Me and these guys would have words for sure...

One of our worst. It's happened before though, just part of it. It'll swing back the other way before you know it.

I keep going and while it's not what it was 10 or 15 years ago I keep thinking the weather cycles will change back at some point and we will have those type seasons again. We could be telling our kids about the 2020's for example like we remember the 90's.

We’ve had a really good season so far (we are up from the wax along Bayou Chene). Over the past 5 years however we had seasons where there was not 1 duck seen on the entire lease over several weekends.

We’ve had this lease for 40 years. Through the 70s, 80s, and early 90s it was insane. Crazy numbers of ducks. During the 90s the type of ducks started to change, more blue wing teal, lots of grays, less pintails and mallards. But the numbers were still there. Then in the late 90s the numbers went down and more and more blue wings. Recently it’s almost all blue wing and the dosgris have showed up.

We really don’t care what kind we shoot. We just want some decent shooting over a few weekends. The teal are the best eating for us. Heck any bird that’s been in our marsh for a few weeks is good eating it seems. We have no problems shooting shovelers, they eat good for us too.

But there’s been massive changes in the flyway and migration for us as well. It’s been a tough decade trying to keep the hyacinths and salvania under control. Now the big arse apple snails are likely to be our next hurdle.
