I bet we know each other. I guided a long time for myself and Doug's.

The guides South of HWY 90 absolutely hunt the same field/blinds too often.

Seems like there is a blind every 40 acres in Thornwell.

I havent been to our marsh in three years. I went Saturday. It was terrible. One little group of 5 teal, a bunch of high flying blackjacks and one bulletproof mallard drake (no way I missed!).

Skys were empty of those ducks we used to see all morning flying NW to SE.

We are just a little SW of Lake Arthur on the intercoastal.

This thread is true to a certain extent, yes duck hunting in LA will probably never be as good as it was 20-30 years ago.

But they are still plenty of spots in South LA that guys kill plenty of ducks and plenty of mallards, pintails, etc.

you just have to be lucky or have the money, connections or both to hunt these spots.

Even the most high end an exclusive clubs have had a pretty bad year. I know three clubs, two in Southwest Louisiana and one in Northeast along the river that have set record lows this year for number of birds killed.

Sky used to be full of high flying North bound ducks coming off the roost in the AM. Geese used to make it up our way around 8AM.

Then you could sit in a rice field and watch it fill up with arctic Mallards (after shooting time) in the evenings.

Doesn't happen anymore. Only good numbers you see are sitting in Lacassine NWR.

Is there anywhere you haven’t hunted or anyone you don’t know when it comes to LA waterfowl

Ok I’ve read this whole thread. Two thoughts:
1. I hunted in Kennet (sp) MO the weekend it snowed here in BR in December. We didn’t see, shoot at, or kill shite. They were waylaying them before I got there. But it was absolute shite for my hunts. So take heart fellas. It ain’t all trophy pics all the time there either.
2. Wasn’t the board full of threads and posts just last year of the incredible duck hunting La was experiencing? Wasn’t Arky dry and all the birds were down here? I know it’s been a shitty year. I hunted the Marsh Club in Vinton last weekend of the first split. It was bad.
No doubt things have changed since the 70s when I started duck hunting, but I wouldn’t write off the state because of one particularly shitty season

Yes, yes it is. It would be even better if the birds cooperated

I see from the post there are different situations for duck hunting in different areas of the state. I enjoy that. I live in Acadia Parish and can only speak of the hunting in this area and the nearby marshes in the sw part of the state.

Agricultural practices have a lot to do with birds feeding and resting. Unfortunately ducks add no value to that . Crawfish ponds are not duck friendly. Carbide guns are used to keep the Geese away and that greatly affects ducks also. Geese can tear up a crawfish pond overnight. Rice farmers that don't use fields for crawfish started plowing the vegation over and use herbicides to kill all vegetation for the winter , no food for geese. I'm not blaming the farmers. Geese can be pretty destructive.
As far as the commercial hunters, they have pretty much driven the few ducks we had left out. This includes both rice fields and marshes . Too much pressure seems to be a common factor in most of the posts on here .

whenever I have been involved with commercial hunting we greatly limited our pressure...... maybe that's why I don't do it anymore

Ive made hunts in about 45 of our parishes..

never hunted at marsh club or cherry ridge - actually I've made very very few hunts at commercial places - but I have been to many....... a few folks pick my brain each year about habitat.. legality ect.....I know the rules inside and out...and how zealous a motivated fed can be.

There are some upstanding commercial operations . Please don't get me wrong but the ones that have come in lately have a different mindset. Get what you can today. I have used commercial outfits in the past and there are some top notch guys out there .

Word. Dude is by far the "mouth of the south" on this board. Dude probably assisted with the screen writing for "National Treasure" with how he tries to keep the majority of his posts cryptic and edgy.

one thing I have seen in acadia, vermillion and Jeff Davis.. is.. say mr thib has 800 acres and puts in 8 blinds at 7.5k a pop.. Mr smith splits a blind with 4 other people..... someone in that group is hunting and traversing to that blind pretty much every day..... the traversing can push as many birds out as the hunting..... that is not how it was done years ago... .but.. if mr smith gives up his blind... there is another person waiting to take it the next year... i clearly remember a 550 acre tract next to ours in jeff davis having only 2 blinds and only being hunted 2-3 days a week....
