Bump
Looking for leader and fly suggestions for reds/bass/destin/SELA. Got me a TFO BVK 8wt on the way to pair with my Allen Kraken.

For redfish I would go with something tapered that's all fluoro, or at least something with a significant amount of fluoro tippet. Rio has a 9' tapered 20lb fluoro leader that works well. I'd buy that or another similar fluoro tapered leader, chop a foot off of it, then add about 2' of 14-16lb fluoro tip for redfish. They're pretty spooky in the panhandle and that will help. You could also make your own, but the packaged leaders will save you time. They're like $10-12, but one or two should do fine.
For flies, anything that looks like a crab or shrimp will work. Lead eye for deeper water. Bead chain if shallow. EP spawning shrimp or EP crab will work. I would go a little smaller than whatever you throw here though. #4-#2ish.

Alright gents, I’ve read through a decent chunk of this thread, some of the links, and some info on other sites. I’ve even watched most of the orvis introduction to fly fishing videos. So naturally, I’m probably about to ask a dumb question.....
For a guy just getting started, that will primarily be stock tank or lake fishing (lots of less than 10 pound bass), I should be looking for a 6 or 7wt rod and line....correct? Any particular flies to get? Would appreciate any help and direction. Likely going to get a sub $200 setup from cabelas or bass pro to dip my toes in.

no reason not to get a 5wt to start.
There are all kinds of flies for bream and bass.
look at wooly worms, ants, spiders, grass hoppers to get you started.

Been a little while fellas - things have been a little busy the last 8-12 months so i haven't been able to fish and post as much as I'd like. Fortunately it looks like that's going to improve going forward. Here's a little sampling from yesterday - got out into some blue lines with the 3 wt and had a blast catching some wild brookies
Oh, and at the trailhead I came across someone's shirt they left to dry out. I snagged some twigs to leave them a message...

Yeah I think if I were going to be after bream I'd want less than 6 or 7 wt. My 5 wt TFO BFK has handled some pretty good sized bass but is light enough for panfish. I will say that if I was going for bass exclusively I'd want the 6 or 7 though.
Good ideas there on the flies. And poppers - I love bass on poppers. Ccard can weigh in on this for sure.

Do y'all have any recommendations on guides who do fly fishing charters for redfish? I have a buddy from Georgia who loves to fly fish and wants to chase some reds.

I’m also interested in going with someone who can find fish and knows what they’re doing. 2 things I can’t do on my own

Capt.Miles Larose of Shallow South. Fishes Delacroix/Venice areas depending on the time of year.

Miles is a good friend of mine and the first guide I recommend to anybody looking for one. He grew up fishing SELA and has a very high level of knowledge about numerous areas and numerous species of fish. Tell your buddy to give him a call 2-3 months in advance of his trip down here.

Where are you looking to go? GA coast? LA coast?

Where at in NC are you located? I'm in close to Brevard and have been wanting to get out to catch some trout. Where would you recommend I try? I've seen people fishing at North Mills river but its always crowded there.

Have you been using a fly rod long? Your experience will sort of dictate where I’d recommend you go. For instance, if you’re new to this you are not ready for where I took those pics above.

Yes sir. I have been fly fishing in south La my whole life. Moved up here about two years ago. I have the same TFO that you posted the above picture with, that I'm pretty decent with.

Awesome, yeah I love the finesse series for small water. I’m clt by the way
Do you have a TD email? I don’t mind sending you some spots but not out in the open
