The Dust Bowl Jackrabbit Drives Were the Darkest Days of Small-Game Hunting in America

quote:

This particular drive was slated to comb four sections of rolling prairie. Organizers loaded nearly 80 volunteers—all boys and men this day—into cars and farm trucks, then dropped them off again along the perimeter. By the time everyone was in position, the hunters had formed a spindly square, each side stretching 2 miles long across the countryside. Then they started walking.

80 people doesn't seem like much to cover a square that was 2 miles on each side.

I know the article mentioned a few coyotes but killing predators is what you gets your too many rabbits.

Looks like it was a dirty job but needed doing.

that wasnt hunting, it was a survival requirement.

you couldnt get anything to grow, and if it did, the rabbits ate it the very same day. if you want to feed your family, you kill the rodents and rabbits eating your familys food

i would think so, they were starving and could barely get anything to grow so they wouldnt waste that meat even if the rabbits were also starving and had no fat.

in a way, it was more humane to kill the rabbits than to let they slowly starve to death

My dad talked about jack rabbit drives in sw ontario in 40s when he was a kid. They would set up a drive between concessions. They would get as many shooters as possible, no fences and would fill pickup trucks w them. They would eat them but not nearly as good as cotton tails. Now its very rare to see a jack.

You can eat them but rabbit starvation is a real thing if it’s not supplemented.

They ate them eventually. The article mentions them being loaded in refrigerated trucks to be sold out east...for $.10/ea.

That wasn’t hunting that was pest elimination just like killing hogs on your land

My uncle would buy them for a penny (1 cent)each. Skin some and sell the skins for 3 cents. The carcasses skinned or not were ground whole and sold to the mink and fox fur farms for food. It was a good little side business for him. I doubt that very many were used for human consumption.

I hope they had the proper permit to carry on such carnage.

Leave it to the millennials to want a permit for killing an animal during the dust bowl. You are lucky you have air conditioning and an Xbox or your arse wouldn’t make it.
