Tell me I'm not the only one that has unintentionally fired a round while

releasing the magazine. It's happened twice with my Tikka 6.5 CM. I swear my finger was not near the trigger each time. As soon as the mag released bam!! Yes, safety should have been on I know. But could it be a defect with the trigger?
This time it's going to be an expensive repair.

I’ve personally never had that happen, but if I had a weapon that has now done this twice I’d be getting rid of it. Safety on or off it should not discharge just dropping the magazine out. Only reason it should fire is if the trigger was pulled.

Have you or anyone else made any modifications to the gun prior?

I plan on it but I'm taking it to a gunsmith first.

It’s never happened to me. Only speaking for me. New or had it a while?

Bought it new 7 years ago. I have shot it more this past year than ever before.

I shot a crater in the cement/plaster ceilings of Married student housing off Nicholson by Northgate seafood n Liquor when I was fixin to clean my gun in 1987. I was disembling my 22 for post rainy hunt cleaning and "POW"...
I finished the squirrel gumbo, patched the ceiling with spitballs and liquid paper and rolled with it...neither LSU nor the wife ever found out.
But I began checking the guns for bullets prior to cleaning from dat day down to dis...and ain't had a near mishap ever since.
Careful yall
Eta: didn't see the "while releasing the magazine" part. Oops, my scenario was different. Still, be more careful than me, y'all.

Never. But why don’t you take it to the range and try to do it intentionally, and figure out what’s going on? I’d do that before taking it to a gunsmith.
I would suggest that most not only remove the mag with the safety on, but even more importantly remove the mag after clearing the chamber. Why are you removing the mag with a round in the chamber AND the safety off?
ETA: quite often during hunting season, like turkey season, I’ll clear the chamber and leave rounds in the gun all sesson.

Did you touch the trigger or not?
An unmodified tikka is not going to have a trigger problem. Your handling of the rifle is unsafe. Your order of operations is certainly off. Malfunction or not, you were doing stuff with the rifle other than clearing the chamber with a chambered round and the safety off.
Take the safety off, lift the bolt handle, then you can do whatever you want. The rifle absolutely cannot fire with the bolt handle fully raised.

You waited until it happened a second time to get serious about looking into it? .
First one I'd agree is accidental. The second one is negligent.

Seems like you’d have learned to keep your safety on the first time this happened.
Like others said, I’d try to replicate this in a safe situation, then take it to gunsmith.

I have a t3x and have never had an issue but am curious. A quick google brings up several instances of slam firing as a result of a loose screw holding the trigger assembly to the action.
Claims of guns going off when safety was flipped or just working the bolt. I may pull mine down after the season and verify torque and loctite.

They are installed with threadlocker at the factory. Slam fires are the result of people dicking with the trigger.

I’m honestly trying to think of why he is removing a mag with a chambered round? Especially with the safety on? ETA: safety off I meant
I can see in a hunting situation if you fired multiple rounds and need to reload the mag, but still want to keep one chambered. But not at the range or house?
My procedure is almost always unchamber a round, then release the mag. Safety on or off doesn’t matter with no chambered round, and depending on the gun some you have to have the safety in a certain position to chamber/ unchamber.

Wife’s 30-06 used to fire a round when she’d click the safety off. It’s a known problem with that Remington model.
It has stayed in the gun safe ever since it’s done it the 2nd time.

Was that the issue they did a recall for? If the problem is just with the trigger mechanism I'd drop a Triggertech or Timney in it.

You had the safety off and a round in the chamber when not aiming at something you intended to destroy. Can’t really trust any other part of your statement given these facts.

The safety on a tikka locks the bolt closed. You have to take the safety off to open the bolt.
