I've never hunted around cows, but now have a new property to hunt with cow pastures, fence lines, and some small pockets of woods. I assume baiting of any kind is out of the question. Im having a hard time finding deer tracks or trails with all of the cow trails and cow shite. I walked the barb wire fence lines thinking I could find a deer crossing, but had no luck there either. The area is loaded with deer. Any advice is appreciated.

Don’t shoot the cows.

They can make all kinds of racket but the deer are use to it. Deer will typically find a “weak point” or spot they like to cross on the fence line, so you’ll see a muddied area. Those are good areas to spot out. Ask the owner about feeding, they may not mind or offer alternatives. I love watching cattle graze.

If you put out corn, prepare to be frustrated.

I bait and cows will run them off but it’s part of the game.

If there is a spot where the cows seems to frequent I wouldn’t put corn down but it’s not too bad. I’ve killed a lot of good deer on cattle land.

Cows are hard to load up or drag out. Need to be able to field dress and cut up where they lie. It’s a lot of damn meat, and much more marbled than deer, though. Don’t have to worry about limits, but farmers don’t like you shooting the cows, for some reason, but they eat everything....

Hog panel cut to 30” and lots of tee post... keeps the hogs and cows away from my feeder..

Don’t cut all the panels... only between your stand and feeder.. gives you a good shoot every time..

Ask the farmer where does he always see the deer at when he’s checking cows.
The deer will be used to cows and humans and trucks from the daily checks most farmers make.
Ask the farmer if you can build some exclusion pens for your feeders/feed area you can use the existing fence row and make a half circle with either hog panels or tpost and barbwire.

This was last weekend. They don’t like cows and sometimes the deer run off but more often they just loop around

Don’t bait. Find what they are eating, or a strip of woods between the pastures or anything that will funnel them

I grew up across the street from a pasture for most of my childhood. Deer were everywhere, all the time. The pasture was mostly surrounded by woods. People would poach deer off that land every year and the old woman that owned it would be waiting at their truck with her shotgun prepared to call the cops. I don't know if she got money, deer meat or what out of it, but I only remember her calling the cops 1-2 time s in my childhood. We use to pick blackberries along her fence every year and some others would want the mushrooms for some reason...

You can put a snare where they cross under the fence if you're in to that sort of thing

If you’re using a rifle, you can prob just hunt around them. Especially if there are some ryegrass pastures. Usually, deer only need 50-100 yds bt them and the and the cows. I move a ground blind as needed. I also have one stand on a fence separating two ryegrass fields and cows are always on one side or the other.

For bow hunting, try to keep a fence/gate bt you and the cows. If you can’t, try not to let the cows see you walking to your spot. If your cows are anything like ours, they’ll wait until you get settled in, and come looking for you. I usually bow hunt out of a climber on the edge of rye grass fields that the cows aren’t in, or I have a small corner of a pasture fenced off with a wire gap and a feeder. Put cow shite in your pockets to mask your scent.

I would try to get in touch with the owner of the cows. He can probably tell you what you need to know (where he sees deer, which areas can be gated off, when the cows are going to be in certain pastures, if there is a spot you can bait.)

If that’s not an option, just go out there in the afternoons and slip around and see if you can spot them to give you a general idea of where they are. Treat it like a mini version of the Midwest. To find sign, go outside the fence.

**make sure you put gates back exactly like you found them. Cow people are weird about that.

The good thing about cows is they are fences and fences help with tracking deer moving and confining them to crossing at certain locations usually. Find the places that the deer cross and hunt the funnels. A lot of times the deer will use the same trails as the cows, but the cows obviously don’t cross the fences.

Water sources? Fence line with thick brush the deer can travel through. Any funnels?

Cow pastures are good places for predator hunting too if it’s something that interest you.

I’ve never hunted when there weren’t cows in the area and I’ve hunted for 35+ years. We put either barbed wire fence around feeders or live with it. Honestly I’ve never had an instance with a cow completely ruining a hunt except last year when several decided to use the box stand I was in for a scratching post.

100% this. I hunted around cows once and we saw a lot of deer. Only con was if the cows saw you they would follow you and stand under your stand and watch you. Looking back it’s hilarious, but at the time it was infuriating.

Don’t carry a bag of corn to the stand. They will follow you.

So I heard.

Use a plywood cow silhouette to stalk the deer.

Or a cow suit.
