a lot of folks who might be shooting at you use 7.62...my guess is there will be plenty of that laying around

btw, great thread.

I'm just worried big brother is getting all of our IPs right now.

.223 for rifles, though I haven't bought an AR yet. Maybe if you lived in the mountains and were going to need to shoot big-arse animals, but not here.

My AR is my go to weapon but I am planning on getting an M1A in .308 because you never know when you are going to need to really reach out and touch someone and .223 won't crack an engine block.

True. I wish my dad still had thousands and thousands of rounds of that and 10 or 12 SKS's like he did in the 90s.
He used to get those for like $70.

Also, I still consider AK/SKS to be more rugged than even the modern ARs, so that's something else to consider. I can't imagine there will be a lot of time to clean guns.

possibly, although I worry as much about our own government as I do about foreign invaders, terrorists etc.

M1A SOCOM

I have a FA91 H&K G3 clone but would love an M1A.

For me, it's 9MM for pistols. I know it's not as perfect as the .40, but it will do the job, it's cheaper, and it's easier for the womenfolk to shoot if they have to.

9mm and .45 will be the most found in abundance.
With regards to the perfection of the .40, you should research this a bit more.

.223/5.56 and .308/7.62x51 and 7.62x39 will ALL be in huge abundance as they are by far the most popular ammo choices for hoarders and collectors and survivalists.

Go look at the "Box of Truth" (Google) and see what a .308/7.62x51 does compared to a .223/5.56. Both have their uses, but while the larger caliber is more expensive... its hardly "impractical".

Which one do you have? I'm not sure if I want an $800 or something like a Daniel Defense.

Plus, they are freaking sweet. But I have my light bolt-action .308 for the long-range stuff (though I can't shoot all that well).

I was more just trying to regurgitate popular opinion on that. Personally, I think 9/40/45 are all fine and dandy. I carry a 9, so obviously I think it will do the trick.

Have a doctor friend who has upwards of 40,000 .223 rounds at his house. I haven't seen it, but someone I trust absolutely has.

Impractical in the sense that it's still relatively expensive and you don't really want to shoot it all day (or at least I don't).
No doubt it's a great round. There's a reason military snipers use it and that there's a call to issue something more powerful than .223 to regular soldiers.

I have a left-handed Stag Arms AR-15.

chambered for 5.56 so I can shoot the standard NATO round or .223 remington. If your rifle is chambered for .223, you shouldn't try and shoot 5.56mm in it.

I have a couple of Mausers chambered for 8MM (7.92) and a shitload of ammo for those. Those bastards will wear your shoulder out and are heavy as shite.

Judging by the way ammo prices have been going up

(my first case of 7.62x39 in 2004 cost me $85) it was a good decision to purchase spare ammunition a few years ago.

Like they say "Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it".

I can't find .22 LR and any retailers around here, for example other than over-priced 100 rd boxes. No more 'bricks'.

Nutjob? I call it prudent; and liberals that hate guns are going to be your best friend if there is any sort of disruption or breakdown of order. Especially in an area as diverse as Baton Rouge.
Blee dat.

The English Intelligence Agency, MI5, uses the following maxim:

"We are four meals from anarchy".

Four meals? That's it? Yep.

quote:

MODERN civilization may not be quite as safe as we thought. Britain’s security services have been privately warning their staff that western societies are just 48 hours from anarchy. MI5’s maxim is that society is “four meals away from anarchy”. In other words, the security agency believes that Britain could be quickly reduced to large-scale disorder, including looting and rioting in the event of a catastrophe that stops the supply of food

The biggest problem with .308 in a battle rifle is the weight. Recoil is no problem in my G3 clone and is only slightly more than an AK and can easily be controlled. However carrying 300rnds of .308 vs .223 is a huge difference. The .308 is shooting a 150-180 gr projectile while the .223 is only slinging 55-70 grains of lead.

Btw, if any of you guys ever need a new gun and don't mind driving to Jennings if it saves you quite a bit of money, hit me up.

ETA: I haven't followed ammo prices lately. What's a good price for 900 rounds of .223?

in the immediate family, and I have access to everything. He'll let me do deals as long as he doesn't have to do the legwork.

By the way, I just noticed the distributor has WOLF .223 and 7.62 in stock again. I didn't realize that stuff was available again.

Retails for around $40/100 right now so $350-360 is in the ball park. If it is brass.

Yeah that sounds about right from what I'm seeing at distributor, but that's for Federal in stripper clips. ETA. This:

I see 1000 rounds of Wolf for less than that.

just saw the "if it's brass" disclaimer. I worry about that for "shooting" ammo, but not so much for SHTF ammo.
