The first firearm I’d like to pick up is an M1911 unless for some reason that’s a bad choice.

No, it's not a bad choice. It's basically what every autoloading pistol has been based off of in some way or another. They've been around for well over a century for a reason. Nothing wrong with other choices but a 1911 is a proven design and are just as reliable as other options. Also, people like to compare 1911s to Glock. One is a model that's been functionally unchanged for 100 years. The other is a company that knows how to market cookie cutter pistols well.

I'd get a 9mm carbine for home defense, cheap, lethal round and plentiful. Plus a stock helps control your shooting and 9mm barely have any kick.

I have a 556 but I've re-evaluated my thinking on it lately for home defense. Better for neighborhood defense, but not really home defense.

using birdshot for home defense will get you killed. If the time comes to defend a home you want to put the threat down as quickly as possible. Birdshot isn’t going to do that unless your 5-10ft away.

there is not much of difference, if any, between the db level of a rifle vs a pistol.

I realize sould level is low priority in a SD situation, but I've heard both indoors with no ear protection. An AR15 is MUCH louder than a 9mm pistol. My head would be ringing after a few rounds of 5.56 indoors. 9mm is more of a pop.

quote:

In general a 16 inch AR-15 firing standard M193 produces a decibel level of around 167 dB give or take depending on environmental conditions.

quote:

As you can see...... a 9mm pistol typically produces around 160 decibels.

dB levels increase exponentially, not linearly.

I think that depends on who is shooting. The blast and the pressure can be a lot for people. You won't hit anything with your eyes closed and your face turned away from the blast. I would still choose the rifle and so would my wife.

My reason would be That is you miss with an AR you will be spraying rounds into other rooms and even houses.

Pistol rounds have a much lower velocity and it’s easier to maneuver between doors with a pistol.

If you spray and pray with a shotgun you aren’t killing you neighbors.

I'm pretty sure this has been debunked

The velocity of AR rounds tends to cause them to fragment quicker and offer less penetration that pistol rounds and buckshot

Good points about decibel levels. I’m glad you brought some data to the table, which seems hilariously ignored by some in this thread.

Read up on auditory exclusion - you will rarely consciously “hear” something during a fight or flight response. Your ears may get damaged and ring after the fact but you likely won’t acknowledge it in the moment.

For this thread as a whole, the 223 round is one of the best for home defense out there. Being lightweight and high-velocity causes it to have a very easily-disturbed flight path. I witnessed this myself in a carbine course shooting a target at 10 yards. I was barely hitting the plywood barricade and my rounds were still key-holing at about 90 degrees on the target. They also offer a lot more ammunition and speed between shots with low recoil.

My wife could maybe handle 3” buckshot in an 870 but she can do infinitely better with the AR. The average person finds the AR15 easier to shoot and handle after the idea of the “big scary gun” is busted on the range.

This isn’t to say that 00 buck from an 870 is ineffective. If it’s your preference, have at it. But the AR15 is quite effective indoors.

Whatever you decide to get, please use it a lot, an awful lot. You need to be able to pick up this weapon when you are half asleep and operate it without a second thought. I keep a Remington 870 "available" that I have used since I was a kid. I know where the pump slide release is without having to think about it. I know when the safety is on by feel. I can pick it up by the end of the barrel and chamber a round in a little more than a second in the dark. You need this kind of familiarity with whatever you decide to get. JMO.

I just bought a 9mm Smith and Wesson and soon I’ll buy a shotgun. People can argue forever about what is best. If a pistol and shotgun aren’t enough. Then I give up.

You realize most experts say the ar is the best option as well. “Lolol”... the boards resident expert a few post above yours even says the same.

Are you one of those that don’t keep one chambered so the criminals can hear you “rack it” types?

Rock Island Vr80 My preferred option for pandemic work: Rock Island VR80. 00 buck shells in 12 gauge.

i cant comment on which is better...

but i own the VR80 shotgun. i love it. i keep it stored in the bed. these are AR style shotguns seem (to me) much easier controling recoil/staying on target. (highly recommend semi-auto shotguns)

a 9mm carbine is an awesome backpack gun. i carry a PC charger concealed in my briefcase. after folding the armbrace it fits perfectly.(leaving plenty of room for the laptop).. this is also 1st choice for home defense simply because i trust it the most. it is accurate in my hands. and the hundreds of rounds(and no misfires iirc) i trust it to be reliable
i dont have any kids.. and neighbors arent on the other side of a wall. i just want something that eliminates the threat as efficiently as possible.

in my hands a small pistol is least accurate...and most prone to jam.
so it would be my last choice for home defense.

All info can be easily found on the net. Training classes will vary in quality from one program to another. There is no standard training.

For HD, Id use/get an AR, revolver, pistol, shotgun. in that order. all are good though, but they AR has more benefits than negatives of all the factors for HD in comparison to the others

If we're talking about fending off the hordes outside of the house, then an AR or AK is a good idea.

If we're talking home invasion, I'd lean more towards a good pistol, with good self-defense ammo.
Why?
OP, go to an indoor range, sit down and listen. Pistols go "bang", rifles (and shotguns) go "BOOM". Especially the short-barreled AR "pistols" in 556 etc. Go up to .308 and it's even more deafening.
Now, consider that your own house is going to be a lot more confined, and you're not going to be wearing hearing protection. Think about squeezing a couple-3 rounds off inside there, and not being disoriented by the noise and concussion.
Then think about rifle rds going through walls, what's behind some of those? Another bedroom?
