Why do you think the military carries M4?
a pistol is back up at best.

Round capacity, reloading, ammo prices, contract bids

I would rather have a pistol than a rifle if I'm dealing with protecting my home from an intruder in the middle of the night.
Yep, I'm not big on the sound of a rifle shooting indoors. I'd much rather deal with the volume level of a pistol.

there is not much of difference, if any, between the db level of a rifle vs a pistol. Remember in a self defense situation you probably won't be using those little whimpy range loads.

a pump shotgun with 00 Buck.
I got talked into changing my mind on this recently. I grew up hunting with an 870 so I take for granted that I can operate it mindlessly. If you didnt grow up shooting a pump, it's probably going to be less reliable in a stressful situation than a good gas semi auto shotgun or a rifle.
I'm pretty firmly in the "get an AR15 for self defense" camp now.

I am curious to hear your opinion as to why not.
I mean all are fine for home defense.. but not in that order
Shotgun #1... smallest margin for error. Load with some 7.5 shot, you will blast any intruder cold, and not penetrate walls enough to injure a family member in other room. Women can use it with much more accuracy than a rifle or pistol where they have to aim down sights. Semi auto shotgun #1.
Again, pistol or AR is fine. But more useful for a skilled marksman. AR will go through walls and injure family, pistol requires aiming down sights and more margin for error than a shotgun

I've got an 870 super mag with a pistol grip set up for turkey hunting, so anyone coming in my house will get a load of turkey shot

I personally would not trust bird shot, especially if there are more than just a couple feet in between you

I disagree with the rifle comment here. its about the same if barrel length is equal
quote:so do pretty much all rounds, yes bird shot the least, but see my comment above.
AR will go through walls and injure family

Mossberg maverick 88 12ga pump loaded with 00 buck. You’re good to go. Once you’re more comfortable with loading, shooting, and caring for guns you can expand how you see fit. If there was one gun everyone should own, it’s a shotgun. I have a few sidearms and my wife knows how to use them but I’ve taught her extensively on the shotgun. You don’t have to be a great shot - there’s not a lot of mechanics involved to cause issues- and it makes one hell of a bang when it’s fired.

For HD, Id use/get an AR, revolver, pistol, shotgun. in that order. all are good though, but they AR has more benefits than negatives of all the factors for HD in comparison to the others
Not knocking you, but why the ar over the shotgun in your opinion?

Ive stated it in the thread.
Easier/more accurate to shoot more than one shot, faster to shoot and more rounds

Thats fine.. but i have plenty of experience with bird shot. And anywhere within a house you are usimh to protect yourself. It will cause complete devistation to someone. If you are worried about ling distance, sure, but how much is that a threat with home defense.
As far as accuracy part, had nothing to do with length, as it does poing and shoot (at least for my wife) who would never hit someone from 10ft away with a rifle or pistol.

I've never met a woman who can handle 12ga buckshot out of a pump. Magnum buckshot in a pump kicks harder than any rifle I've ever shot, and the reduced recoil stuff is still pretty stout.

Nothing, what about 10 yards? 15?... alot

Luckily for me, there isn’t a 45 foot clear line of sight in my house

Lol, i have 15yds easy n my house through living room, kitchen, dining room. Again, im not shitting on AR, or pistols. I have all around the house. But for #1 sole purpose. If had to choose one. For me and my wife. Def semi auto shotgun with 6 or 7.5 shot. I would normally grab pistol if something happens at the house myself. But if i leave for a trip, and wife and kid alone. I always leave shotgun , and show wife to point and shoot. Zero, 100% zero chance i could trust her to hit a still object at 10-15yds with a rifle, much less a pistol.

With buckshot there isnt. At 15 yards there still isnt going to be very much of a spread.
Yall need to try some flite control buckshot. The stuff is incredible. It patterns paper plate sized at 40 yards in every shotgun I've tried it in
