I'm looking for a Truck for my son. I've just about narrowed it down to a 2020-2023 Colorado or Tacoma. I drive a 2017 Tundra and have been very happy with it.

Is there anything I should know year/model wise that should steer my decision between these 2 choices? Anything I should be aware of or look out for? Or is it just drive them and see which I like the best? Looking 4 door and less than 25k miles. Looks like I can find either in the $25-$30k range. TIA

Hand off your Tundra to him and get yourself a new one!

That was the original plan but my Tundra has like 140k miles on it and treated rough. My thought process is I want this vehichle to last him through college and into early adulthood. One less thing he'd have to worry about if he's getting married, kids, etc

It's not a troll. I like both trucks but admittedly I'm not a truck person. I've also heard there's some stuff about newer model epa stuff that might help push me one way or the other?

At 140k your tundra is just getting warmed up. That would be an excellent truck that could last him through college and more if he takes care of it

The Tacoma has the highest resale value of all vehicles.

That should tell you everything you need to know.

Kinda what I was leaning to as well.

Should I specificly target the v6 or is the smaller engine good too?

Depends on what you want it for. More power is always great. Idk about reliability on 4cyl vs 6cyl, but if you don't need the power you'll save a lot of gas I assume. Tacoma v6's are almost as bad as wrangler ones.

That's even more reason to pass it to him. That truck will go 300k and he can pick up right where you left off banging her around.

Do NOT get a 4cyl Tacoma. The mileage savings will be lost in the pedal trying to get it up to speed.

V6 4wd Tacoma with KO2 all terrains gets 18 mpg in the city. You could probably stay in the 20mpg range with paw paw tires.

Get him the Tacoma. My dad did the same as what you’re doing for your son. 12 years later and I’m still driving the thing. No major issues. Just had to replace a wheel bearing once.

Then you have answered your own question. A gm product won't last that long.

The v6 in the Tacoma is the most anemic engine I’ve driven in the last decade. To the point of being dangerous pulling out in traffic with 33s. It’s bad bad. Maybe not a negative for a teenager though!

All they are putting in the 2024s are turbo 4cyl.

A few years ago, I helped my sister-in-law buy a Tacoma for my nephew.

This was is 2019. My nephew had done tons of research and had found the best deal he could for a 2.5yr old with 35k miles. It was at CarMax.

They were getting ready to sign the papers and I got them to go with me to a local Toyota dealer that I friends with the GM.

The same truck he was looking at Carmax was sitting on the showroom floor and it was the color that my nephew wanted. I talked to my friend and asked him what he needed on that truck. It was brand new and they had it on the floor plan for I think 5-6 months and the GM said he was ready to sell it.

He gave us the price and it was $2k cheaper than the used truck. On top of that, he gave us a better price on the trade in (was my brother's Tundra).

Moral of the story, make sure you look at new vehicles as well. The car market is coming back to normal somewhat, but new may be a better deal.
