Tablets on a boat

I was thinking of getting a couple of 10" tablets to run Navionics as a cheap alternative to two new units on my boat. If you put the anti-glare screen protectors on them can you see them well out in the sun ? Was going to put them in a waterproof case and mount with Ram style mounts. Would they hold up in a bass boat ? I have never owned a tablet so any help would be appreciated.

Well wouldn't you have to have a data plan on each one? Seems that may get expensive

I think your biggest concern would be overheating. They really don't like to be out in the sun.

Overheating and being able to see the screen in the sun would be your issues.

I use Narvonics on my phone.

Panasonic rugged
Get one of these. Its refurbished but has a daylight readable screen and water resistant case. These things sell for well over 1k new.

As far as I can tell, Navionics doesn't use data. You download the maps for your region for 50.00 and as long as the tablet has GPS that's all you need.
I was unaware they were bad to overheat, maybe a fan could be rigged to help with cooling.
DO the anti-glare screen protectors help at all with the glare ?
Also I'll look into that Panasonic. Thanks everyone so far.
Also has anyone here messed with SonarPhone for these ? Seems for 150.00 you get a transducer that transmits via WiFi to any device. I have a Garmin 73sv on the console already for down and side scan, But was looking at options for a second console unit to be used primarily for mapping as well as one for the bow.

Seems like you're going out of your way to Jerry rig some stuff on your boat that won't functiom/look great. With the price of units now, just buy a chartplotter.

I don't think most tablets have some sort of GPS device in them but the ones that would have GPS capabilities would run off cell towers and need a data plan. The anti-glare screen protectors work but some tablets have polarized screens and it's a pain in the arse if you have polarized sunglasses on. I know if I turn my field iPad vertical, I can't see shite while wearing my Ray Bans

Pretty sure that Panasonic is stuck with 4.0 unless you root the OS.

Well considering a Helix 10 sonar/GPS combo is 1000.00 I'd save quite a bit of cash. The cheapest 7" combos are around 400.00 and up and like everyone else I would prefer a bigger screen if possible. I fish Pickwick lake 90% of the time which means ledges and grass. When fishing the grass a chart is more useful than a sonar for boat position, and as said I have a 73sv for scanning ledges.
If it needs a data plan that would be a deal breaker for sure, I was just weighing my options as I have a pretty limited budget for this stuff. Especially since I need to get my EMM rebuilt to the tune of 650.00. Thanks again everyone for the suggestions.

Get a cheaper unit that has Wifi and you can mirror what ever charplotter unit you have.
Simrad GO7 xse
Lowrance Elite 7 Ti
Both have wireless and are really nice units.
I have the Ti running at the console and an iPad running at the bow on a ram mount. I ran a 12v plug to the front to keep it charging.

That would be awesome if my unit does that. I have a Garmin 73sv, not sure if it has that capability. Guess I need to dig out the manual to see.

i just bought a Garmin 94sv without transducer for $599. That's a 9 inch display. Tablets aren't much cheaper than that if at all. They are still on sale.

Ipads do regardless of cellular.
ETA: MY mistake. SneakyWaff1es pointed this out and appears to be correct. I assumed they did because location services works on mine but apparently it gets that data when on WiFi and that is the only time I have used it.

You'd still want sonar too, right?

Ah, wasn't aware of that. My work iPad runs off cells towers and don't have one personally. Good to know

No way this will work with any product made by apple. If I leave my iphone6+ on my boat seat for more than about 5 minutes the temperature warning pops up and renders it useless till it cools back down.
