If Ford will try and save money on an $8 part, what else with they go cheap on?
That's incredible.
Think about all the cars and truck Ford has sitting in fields waiting on microchips. They're going to try and sell those as new though they've been sitting up for months.
Ford stock is trading at $16.4. It will be at $5 in the next two years.

pry the chrome cover off or hammer a socket on

his Ford tech goes back decades. I had a 88 Ranger in HS and rounded a lug nut due to this chichy bs.
That's absurd, and it's why I avoid certain car companies. Any good company can put out a product or feature that doesn't work that well. The ones who give a shite about quality work hard to fix the problem in future models, the ones who don't figure as long as they're still selling trucks why not? And they'll continue to sell them, but not to me.

What about Dodge, Toyota, Honda and GM? Almost every big OEM has used two-piece lug nuts, pretending this is a Ford-only issue is just a demonstration of ignorance.
The vast majority of the failures and problems have more to do with the fool behind the impact gun that the lug nuts themselves. This even applies to the all-steel flanged lug nuts that need 100 ft-lbs vs 140 - 150 ft-lbs, not the OEM's fault people are too lazy to look up the torque spec or think they know better.

My 2000 Jeep TJ Wrangler had the same type of design. Swapped them out. had no idea our 2013 F-150 had same until Discount Tire mentioned it. Swapped them out.

I think Ford could build in a self destruct mechanism and you'd be in here explaining how great it is

quoting this for a reminder in 2 years.

I had to replace all 24 on my 2014 F-150 a couple of years ago. The only problem I had prior to that issue was an ignition pack failed on 1 cylinder.
Now one of the blend door actuators has failed. They evidently started with that part and built the entire truck around it. A $60 part takes around 7 hours to replace it. Console and dash have to come out to access it. Estimate is $1,000.

Ok. The economy will be in a recession within 2 years. The Fed has blown it.

I give credit where it is due and blame where it is as well. You can just as easily find out how many other makes use the same type of lug nuts with the exact same complaints.

I had that issue on my personal F150's and the ones I bought for my business.
Nothing you can do but change them out to aftermarket ones.

You obviously know a lot about Fords. What other areas do you call yourself an expert in?

It's the nature of that design. Several manufacturers use that style now. I had to swap on a factory wheel back onto my 2012 Camaro last year while I dropped my other wheel and tire off for service. I've been running aftermarket wheels since 2015 and the factory ones and their lug nuts have been sitting up in my shop since then.
When I went to swap on the factory wheel, I had no problem putting them on. However after a few days of heat cycling and being exposed to the elements 3 of the 5 lugs on the wheel were swollen up and it took me trip to Lowe's to buy a cheap metric impact socket I didn't have in the next size to get them off. Even after that, I had to drive each lug nut out with a punch after putting the socket in a vise.
It's POS design and whatever engineer thought it up should be thrown from a plane.

I'm not understanding what the purpose of that sleeve is??

Toyota does this same shite, my wife's 2016 Sienna has the same issue and I decided to preemptively get the Japan spec lug nuts with no liner/cover last time I rotated the rims. Tossed the OEM ones in the trash.
If you keep the vehicle long enough it will get you sooner or later. In Northern climates with salt roads, it will be sooner.
Total shite cost savings design.

To save a few pennies per unit and make a bare steel lugnut look like a solid chrome plated one.

Do you remember how many miles you had on the odometer before you decided to change the factory crappy 2-piece plugs? Were you changing them as part of regular preventative maintenance or were you getting misfires? Was that the 4.6L or 5.4L?
