I love them offshore for snapper, jigging and topwater.

Inshore, I use them for cork fishing or when really windy with jig heads.

Freshwater, I use them for ultra light presentations, wacky worm, and sac-au-lait fishing.

Fish with kids almost always, and offshore almost always now, almost always windy, and with live bait, so use them 90% of the time now. All my Shimanos will out cast my Calcuttas anytime. If you are casting further with Calcuttas, i need to know the trick. I use line under 12 lb test on both.

When I was bass fishing never used them no matter how windy, as I like to palm my reel and could be accurate enough with them.

If you need to cover a lot of water, Make long cast, using live bait or cast into wind, use spinning reel.

In tight canals, bouncing bait off trees, lilies, worm or jig fishing, use baitcast.

Spinning reels are a necessary evil. A must for The White Perch and a preference for trout with cork. I also like to drop shot and whacky with one. I use a swivel when whackying, so twist is kept to a minimum. Spinning reels have caused me to cuss more than any other inanimate object.

I use 12lb line but do not outcast a spinning reel with a baitcaster. Sometimes when I have just cleaned and respooled my calcutta I can cast it a mile but I doubt farther than a I would a spinning reel.

I haven't tried to fish w/ a baitcast since I was 10 and kept getting birds nests. I'm too afraid to invest in a reel and pole b/c of that trauma as a child.

I use spinning reels for lighter baits only.

I haven't ever been able to throw my Calcutta very far. I use 12 on it and my max is maybe 20-30 yards

II can throw other baitcasters out far easily, just not a Calcutta

Buy a calcutta. Let the bait fall and adjust the tension so that it doesn't fall too fast. The weights on the inside are already set(pull every other one out if not). Very hard to backlash when all these are set.

Nowadays, with magnets and centrifugal brakes you can set a baitcast to where it's easier to cast than a Zebco.
I really cannot see any time I'd use a spinning reel. Granted that they work better for light finesse baits and allow them to drop straight down rather than pendelum away from structure. I even own one but it sits in the rod box 99.9% of the time. I just haven't needed it bad enough to use it yet.

Have you adjusted the brakes on the spool?

Unless I'm fishing for something big, I use spinning reels. I'm much more accurate (practice with the damn thing), can throw further, not affected by wind and I can take anyone I want fishing with me and not worry about then screwing up the reel just trying to cast.

Take off the sideplate and you will see 6 small plastic weights...I think they are red. Pull out every other one.

Shimano Symetre 2500 Fl

Best spinning reel ever bought. I have had it since 2007. It's my go to and has never broken. Well actually a rubber guide within the spinning mechanism tore but it still works like it did when I bought it. By far the best Spec, redfish, bass, even offshore situations.

I have tried to pull out every one before, and it didn't do much. Went from Trilene XT to regular line, and it didn't do much either. It is oiled, and most of the oil lightly wiped off, so there isn't too much

No idea. Maybe I junk got a bad one

Shimano, I have everything but a stella, want one but can't justify it ye. (LOL) Everyone is good soem are great.

I use 12lb line but do not outcast a spinning reel with a baitcaster. Sometimes when I have just cleaned and respooled my calcutta I can cast it a mile but I doubt farther than a I would a spinning reel. This is my experience too, I can adjust the anti-backlash on a calcutta to get great distance for about dozen cast if I am lucky, then I regret it. Great reels but cant outcast a Shimano spinning reel, for me anyway.

A great fisherman once told me that confidence and flexibility were his two best baits. Confidence that he could catch fish with every lure in his tackle box and the flexibility to be able to change baits at any time. I think the same probably applies for rods and reels to rods. My wife makes fun of me but I always bring at least half a dozen with me. Therefore if you are Bait casting guy you should always have a spinning rod and reel with you and if you're spinning guy you should always have a bait caster with you too. Just in case.

I prefer spinning reels in the wind, but I use bait casters when I need accuracy.
