You are right! 5 is plenty to keep. You are just going to let them get freezer burnt anyway.

Y'all are getting carried away with this narrative of no one eats their trout now...5??

We aren't all trashy bastards. Nothing goes to waste in my freezer. I could catch 25 a day every day for a month and they'd all get ate.

Only need a limit of 5 is a joke. Camp in Venice and we never have enough fish for my family. We gather together as a family more than most I would think. Different members come at different times fishing and we don’t always catch. Problem I have with the proposal is the only 1-20” upper limit. I will still go with the 15 limit but with a 20” upper limit also not so sure. Running downriver gets costly to only be able to keep 1 fish if we get on good ones.
My question is what says we need a change? The last couple years with the high river it has not been great. This year has been better than I remember since late 80s early 90s. Seems to me Mother Nature has its ups and downs as it is suppose to.

I’d just like to see some reasonable arguments that give an idea of what precisely they are doing to the trout population. Everytime people bring up trout limits everyone starts screaming “pogey boats” as if that is universally accepted as the biggest contributor to our dwindling trout numbers.

I wish I still had the pics from a few years ago of the piles of trout they were killing (by being in areas they weren't supposed to be anyway). It's absurd.

a person observing a pogie boat twice this week - noted "they were catching significantly less red fish than this week last year"

pogey boats are big but the increased rapid rate of habitat decline is the true devil

Sure it is. But some people don't just want to keep just enough for one meal. Some people may only be able to fish twice a month. With fuel prices, a half of a day on the weekend and all of that, people want to keep more than one meal if you work.

And to clarify, I have no dog in the speckled trout fight. I've only fished for specks once in my entire life for them with an inshore guide out of Fort Morgan, AL.
I am fortunate to be able to fish 7 days a week if I want and am therefore very selective of what I harvest. But I understand most can't do that and for the time and money investment, would like to keep about 3-4 meals from a trip.

Not really. Maybe one meal. I have three kids. 10 filets will be gone in one meal, maybe we have 1 leftover. I’d like to get more than one meal out of a trip. If I limit, I’ll have trout for dinner three times in a week. Give some to my parents. I might freeze one meals worth after that.

I bet most people put them in the freezer and eventually just throw them away

I dont freeze any seafood.....maybe shrimp and crawfish tails but thats about it.....I dont freeze fish.....I either eat it fresh or give it away to family, neighbors, friends or the food bank.

There is a reason every other state has a min of at least 14"....yet LA won't make the easiest fix it can make with this species

Comparing Louisiana to other states is comparing apples and oranges. The fisheries couldn’t be any different.

There are a lot of trout out there this year. Part of the reason is the lack of rain and the low river level. I would be happier with a 13 inch minimum, one trout over 21 inches, and a 20 fish. I would also agree that something must be done about pogey boats.

I like that. I have never felt great about keeping 12" trout.

It's still gonna be "12. 15 will be the limit though. I know some people that know some people. They are having tough enough time agreeing on one issue about trout. There's no way they will agree on both size and limit.
