Off the top of my head I’m going to say water snake. Not sure which kind because there’s a couple and the pic isn't great from my phone.

Could be but the coloring on the side of the head leans me more towards broad banded water snake.

That's an Eastern Indigo snake. They are extremely rare, thank God. These snakes are Apex predators and will seriously hinder the food supply (rats and other small game) that Rattle Snakes and Copperheads need for survival. Best kill it.

I only saw one photo and the head wasn't visible?

Also, I'm assuming the snake was seen somewhere in GA or the carolinas?

South Louisiana is where the pic was taken. Doesn’t match pics of the Eastern Indigo as none of those pics had the white stripes. The person who saw it said it was a grayish black, not jet black also.

I'm going with Eastern King. I'm no expert by any means.

At first I thought broad-banded water snake, but after looking again I think it's an Eastern King. Bands are pretty narrow and looks like there are some whiteish marking near the face. No expert be any means though.

All but certainly an eastern kingsnake

I’ve never personally seen one in LA

The only other possibility is a broad banded water snake that’s about to shed (hence the gray)

You were actually correct. It is a broad-banded watersnake. I glanced at the small photo on my phone, assumed it was on the east coast, and thought it was an eastern king.

After taking a better look, knowing the location, and zooming, it's definitely a broad-banded watersnake (Nerodia fasciata confluens).

These threads always crack me up. Seems like snakes are the only reptiles out there were there are disputes about what kind of snek they are.

I'm constantly amazed at the stupidity on the boards. Congrats. You win dumb arse of the day. They are a beautiful snake that is threatened. Like the King, they will eat venomous snakes like the copperhead and rattlesnake. I've seen some really cool pics on this board of absolutely beautiful species, and I was lucky enough to hold one once. Really should educate yourself.

Broad banded watersnake. The eastern kingsnake is not found in Louisiana.

I found some links on google that say that the "Easern Black Kingsnakes" are indeed found in South East LA?
