Thanks in advance. I shot it from afar. But I’m still hesitant to handle it.

I had a feeling this stinky thread wouldn’t get much traffic.

You're on your own. Just think though, you can make yourself a skunk skin hat. When you get to go back around people, you will get noticed right off.

Not to change the subject, but I haven't seen a skunk in a long time around here, not even on the road.

If it is dead, put on some rubber gloves, clothespin on nose, free it into a plastic bag and close it up quickly. DO NOT kneel on the ground around it or touch anything you don't have to.

That's all I've got.

Might be easiest to let the buzzards have it.

You need 2” of rain and 15 days and some buzzards

Leave it in for a few days, coyotes will eat it.

Latex gloves for handling the trap with garbage bags over your boots.

Soda in the peroxide baking soda mixture

I’d let it lie and decompose as much as possible.

Best to shoot through the ribs. Less likely to spray that way. If it smells like is your friend

How expensive are fox foothold traps? I’d be tempted to write it off as a business expense.

This is the plan, they are not expensive.

I have been exactly where you are now and it did NOT end well. So, I will refrain from offering advice

shoot it
shoot its foot off
then move it with a pitchfork

or

shoot it
set some legholds around it and catch a fox

Update: it was frozen yesterday so I pulled up the stakes, scooped up the skunk and trap with a large snow shovel and dumped onto my burn pile. Will light the bonfire this weekend and hope that the Christmas tree out smells the skunk. I also was able to save the trap and not touch the skunk. I’ll check that trap later for smells and set another trap for the fox. There is always a possibility that I’ll be in this position again. We have a boatload of skunks up here.
