Looking at new side by sides for trail riding and no hunting. The new Wolverine X4 looks very intriguing from Yamaha. Also looking at Pioneer 1000, Polaris General, or Kawasaki Tyrex. This will strictly be used to load wife and kids up and ride trails. Anyone have the models listed and have any feedback?

I have owned belt driven atv's for over 15 years and have never once had one break or slip. I just pulled my polaris 850 xp after 5,000 miles and it looks brand new.

I used to do R & D work for a company that builds atvs. They are big time in Europe where they are road legal but never did take off here. The company is TGB. They supply the engine in the Mahindra 1000cc side by side.

The company got their start as an OEM supplier for CVT transmissions. Polaris and CanAm still use TGB's CVT. The problem with more automamtic trannys on side by sides and atvs is they aren't vented properly, thus the excessive heat causing the belt to shred. Some manufacturers, in an effort to remedy this issue compromise the ability to keep water out of the CVT/tranny area causing the belt to slip when its wet.

It sounds like you won't be doing much mud bogging so this may not be an issue. When looking at a unit, check out where the snorkel for the tranny is. Envision how deep any water will be you may go through and don't forget to account for a "wave" your unit will create while going through said water. Make sure the top of the snorkel is above this point.

ALL of the manufacturers build decent products if you take care of them, use good gas (non-ethanol), keep the air filter clean and change the oil regularly. They ALL are also a POS if you don't do these things.

CanAM is going to be high as camel pussy when you need it repaired due to the Canadian exchange rate so keep that in mind.

Yamaha, Polaris, and Kawi have been building side x sides the longest so those have more R & D hours behind them. I'd stick with those three brands if it were my $. I've never been a Polaris fan. Back when I was in the business, they were mechanically inferior to the Jap brands but they seem to have gotten better since then.

My SIL and daughter recently got a Kawasaki Mule Ranch edition. Water cooled, shaft drive, electric power steering. Not cheap but real nice.

Just wondering what kind of issues you've had, and if it was the 700 or the 1000?

I have a 700-4 and love it. I've had zero issues but don't do much mud riding, use it for deer hunting & farm work.

I've had 5 grown men, all 200+ lbs, and 3 deer on my Pioneer 700-4 and it never missed a beat even on the hills at my deer lease.

I'm so tired of typing the explanation for this, so this will be brief.

X4: limited space. Even if you're skinny you'll notice the shoulder bolster stabs you in the back getting in and out. 70ish hp

Honda 700-4: reliable and boring. Only 40 hp. seating is better

Teryx: honestly the best 4 seater sold.

Honda 1000-5: between transmission issues, catching fire, and how hot it is, keep it. If you buy one, get the longest warranty you can. You'll thank me. Dealer service departments are flooded with these.

Yamaha, viking and six. BIG, dead reliable, 50 up.

Polaris: they don't break as much anymore, great power, but they always feel.... Loose.

The best advice I can give you is to pick the one YOU want to ride. The wife and kids will be burnt out after 2/3 trips and you’ll be riding solo for the most part

Get a four wheeler

I second ATV Zone for pricing.

I bought a Polaris Ranger from there but I wouldn't buy another. Suspension feels like I have a million miles on it and I baby it.

Have one and fully agree, I like the jump seats so that I can fit 4 or 5 (or seat 2-3 with a bed) but without the UTV being 20’ long

Boring ....yes, but that is a positive for me, it is for utility not for sport for me, and there is some kids that ride it and I don’t have to worry about them hot dogging it

How long have you had the Wolverine? The 2019 now has the 850 motor in it.

The x2 is an all new chassis. Basically a 2 seater Viking.

The regular wooverine is yanahas super reliable single. With 1 caveat. Has the 708 big bore twin cam in it. They got slightly more power out of it at the expense of long term valve seal reliability. Around 800 hours or so the valve seals will start to leak slightly.

They have since removed the motor from their grizzlies and gone back to the 686 motor with a single cam design.

In short, the old Viking with the 686 or the Polaris with the 800 (only available used) are the beat multiseat options.

The Teryx is the best 4 seater with the most room that no one buys. Which is sad. It's a great bike. Only real issues are that kawi motors are tuned a little rich and it wipes out O2 sensors if it isn't run up to temp a lot.

I won't fault it for that because all of the Hondas are as well.

The mule pro series is also a very good bike.
