My wife got into duck hunting with me 3 years ago when we got married. She had only deer hunted before so we had to buy her a shotgun...she was insistent that she wanted a pump in 12 gauge, didn't matter what I said. She eventually settled on a Remington 870 in 12 gauge...basic model, not the field master or whatever. Fast forward 2 years, and it's wearing her out and bruising up her shoulder (I warned her before we bought the thing that it was gonna be a rough gun).

Now she has decided she wants a semi auto and something that kicks a little less. I shoot a SBE2 and she likes the feel of it, but we aren't trying to spend that kind of money. Budget more around $1000 or less. The only shotguns I have ever owned or shot are an old 20 gauge Remington 870 express I shot when I was growing up, a Remington 1187 I used throughout high school that felt like it weighed about 30 lbs, and then bought my SBE2 after college once I got a real job...plus her 870, so I don't really have experience with a wide range of shotguns.

So, trying to find a nice middle ground between being light enough for a 130lb women to carry around and shoot, without being too light and having recoil to knock her in the water.

Any suggestions welcome. Thanks.

Get an A300 in her hands to try out. I've got the older outlander model and it's been an amazing gun for the price (and above).

Either an A300 or Winchester SX4. Let her hold both side by side and see which one swings better.

I suspect they will have similar felt recoil because the SX4 is gas driven and lighter. The A300’s weight should tame recoil to a similar level as the gas system on the SX4. I’ve never shot either so just a hunch.

Depending on her size Franchi affinity compact in 12 g would be a great shotgun if she is smaller.
You really need to let her feel them and see what fits her best.

swapping to semi over pump should reduce felt recoil. might want to stay with a 12g. Id definitely find a buddy that has a few semi auto 12g and try them out before downgrading to 20g.

Definitely don't want to drop down to a 20g. Looking for 12g semi auto for sure.

This. They both come in models that will probably fit her better too. My wife shoots an SX3 compact 20 gauge and it’s a great gun.

That’s just dumb. SBE 20 gauge kills plenty of ducks and geese.

I’d get her a nice 20 gauge auto from any of the big B manufacturers.

Nothing wrong with a 20. I’ve killed tons of ducks with a 20. Also… a 12 gauge inertia gun is not going to have much less felt recoil when compared to an 870. Don’t make that mistake.

ETA: If you absolutely must get a 12, an A300 ultima with the kick off might be your best bet.

When the OP is worried about recoil, why would you recommend inertia over gas?

If I had a wife, and she got into duck hunting, I would quit duck hunting.

Mossburg SA-20 with bismuth or tss is a duck killing machine. I switched to one a few years ago and have enjoyed it. Less recoil than most all inertia 20’s.

Have taken mine twice. If she ever complains about my duck hunting or goose hunting taking time away from her ...she knows I will invite her along in a New York second.

Now she just smiles when I tell her I am going hunting and says to have fun.

Or bring her a couple times when it’s freezing and rainy and dont dress her properly.
