I’ve moved out west and my former hobbies are not possible and looking for new ones.

I found out that pheasant hunting is a thing in Utah and there’s a trap club near me.

What’s a good starter over/under to get through the early stages of exploring this sport and upland hunting.

I’ve quail hunted before but never pheasants. I’ve shot sporting clays before but never trap.

I will use trap as sport and practice for pheasants. I’ve read that O/U is preferred for trap due to etiquette and others safety.

I don’t mind O/U in the field as I used a silver pigeon for quail. I just don’t want to lay out silver pigeon money yet in case I just don’t get into it.

Budget?

I'd get a used citori. They aren't absurdly expensive for how well regarded they are and you'll probably be able to sell it for what you paid for it if you decide you don't like it.

If you want a cheap one, a few of my friends have CZ's and they like them a lot. They seem to be an excellent value for the money, especially the ones with extractors instead of ejector. One of them has come to prefer the extractors.

Look into huns and grouse. I know a guy in Idaho that hunts those over his pointer all the time. Kills a bunch.

Browning Citori but that’s about the same price as a silver pigeon.

What I’d say is get a gun with 30” barrels. Most trap specific are either 32 or 34” which would be too long for hunting. 30” would be a good compromise.

Budget isn’t really an issue other than I don’t care to spend $2600 to start. Found some beautiful guns in that price range of course.

I looked at the CZ and watched TFL vids where he reviews them and they seem like a good entry.

I was actually looking at the CZ Wingshooter Elite 20 ga.

I held a Tristar 12 and didn’t hate it. Need to read more about it. It’s around $600. Obviously not a pretty gun but I have never been one to worry about brands and looks.

I will look for a used Citori as well.

Trap and hunting really don't compliment each other. For trap u want a gun that shoots high so you can see the target and shoot below the clay.
For hunting you generally want a flat shooting gun.
My recommendation would be a citori or beretta, whatever fits you best. Barrel length no more than 28" for hunting.

Check out a browning cynergy cx. I got one for sporting clays based on a suggestion from a buddy that has one and has a citori cx as well. He claimed he likes the cynergy better.
Buddy of mine has a CZ and for the money it seems to be a decent gun although he did have to get some work done to the firing pins after only a couple years of use.

Bought a Franchi Instinct in 20ga before a pheasant trip years back and I really like it, I don't know anything about trap shooting,

I have a yildiz from academy, I’ve shot skeet, sporting clays, ducks, you name it. I’ve never had an issue with it at all and would recommend for a good cheap starter. I beat the hell out of mine in the flooded timber and it never misses a beat!

Whatever you buy, make sure it does not have an auto safety.

I bought a Yildiz, and it beat/bruised the hell out of me for sporting clays. Went to a heavier silver pigeon, and it's gentle as can be.

Agree on the no auto safety for clay sports. Too much PITA.

OP, if you have any decent shotgun, just go shoot trap with it for a bit and talk to the other shooters about what they like.

Some high school kids practice trap at a range I visit, and they shoot everything from fancy O/U to camo semi-autos.

I've been shooting my Weatherby O/U 12 ga. at Pheasant and Quail the last 3-4 years. I've really enjoyed it. Easy to carry on long walks.

I’ve got a Citori and it’s a great gun. It’s supposed to be a field/sporting clay combo gun but one thing I’ve found is that it’s a bit on the heavy side in the field. The Silver Pigeon is a little lighter and is better suited as a field gun but not bad as a sporting clay gun. As others have said, get a 30” bbl.

Not a bad gun. Its internals are very similar to Beretta (if I’m remembering correctly). I’ve only seen one and it was a kid that shot on the trap team when my son was on it.

Yes. I liked it better than the Stoeger Condor or the CZ O/U and wasn't running my spend up into the $1,000 - $1,300 range or higher.
