And didn't have much mass. My question is based on this description do y9u believe I killed a young deer or a deer with not so great genes

Even if it's an older deer, I still wouldn't call that bad genes. A lot more goes into my definition of 'good' than just brow times.
If he gets to 19" inside, that's a damn good start.
Either way, it would be impossible to answer your question based on your description.

Were the brows broken? I’d venture to say that a good 45-60% of our 4.5 yr old and younger bucks break brow tines while sparing in the summer.

Yes the brows qere brokem i believe. I had to make a quick decision as I was looking at another deer when I saw this one crossing about 200 yards down the line and when I saw the spread I had to make a decision because he was about to go into the woods. I feel bad for rushing my shot and feel like I ryumed my chance to kill a real monster next year

Don’t beat yourself up. With a 19” spread, it’s most likely 3.5+. You did the best you could in the situation.
Develop a “quick check” system:
10” or better tine - check
Appearance of mass - check
Body size for a mature buck - check
Then shoot.
I shot a similar buck you described a couple of seasons ago. It was a very foggy morning and all I could see was a deer sillouete with a 19” spread. Boom. Ended up having thin horns. Spread got him shot.

Hey it’s all part of hunting. The important part is that you’re in the woods and doing what you enjoy. Make mistakes and learn is my battle cry with all my nephews and younger hunters.

Mass is a much better indicator of age then spread. How many young deer have absurd mass? Basically none, but plenty have good spread.
I wouldn't sweat it too much OP as most guys would have shot in your situation.
But imo any thin horned deer is usually younger, spread is just genetically better. Thick almost always comes with age.

Sounds like you should be proud of the buck.

Maybe that's true when there isn't a management program in place, but I've seen 3.5 yr old deer with WAY more mass than 6.5 or older deer. Antlers are generally a great way to get age completely wrong, many more productive ways to age a deer.

Lol, yeah no. But are clearly an expert so please continue.
Thin horned 19 inch spread deer are usually a sign of a mature buck....

You should be happy with the deer.
Stop the antler obsession

Lol you think you age a deer by its rack? No.

Where’s a picture of him? Take a picture then register on imgur, upload it then post it

ARe you two dudes arguing for/against judging age based on rack size? If so, which one is arguing that rack correlates with age? I? just want to make sure I’m laughing at the right guy.

I’m saying antlers can’t be an accurate predictor of age.

Threads like this make me shake my head... One guy "upset" he killed a deer plenty would be thrilled with, and two others behind the fence measuring their mushroom caps.

I'm not upset with my buck I just prefer not to kill young bucks and that's what I feel like I might have done
