I agree with Greenhead, as well. And it hurts that most people aren't calling in their kills for LDWF to get an accurate representation of population densities. What really sucks is that shorter season/antler restrictions/etc. only really affects the law-abiding hunters among us. I haven't hunted deer in Louisiana more than about 5 times in the past few years, but I called in every one I did take. Hope our herds can improve in age and quality in the coming years.

and kill dog hunting

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's detrimental to the deer population. We run dogs every weekend that it's open, and I guarantee if the 15 to 20 of us in our group still hunted instead, we would kill more deer than running the dogs.

If we all call in all our tags, whether we kill or not, maybe they'll make the season longer.

Does LDWF account for people who get tags, but don't kill anything?

True, but it's really hard to outlaw on the NWRs with their restricted entrances and agents generally present. This would help bring them back to where they were before the centerfire and muzzleloader days were added.

rack minimum on bucks, 6 point or better or something along those lines

Marsh bucks where i'm at would never get that big. it might work in other parts of the state, but not down here. if more people knew how to age a buck, id go with that

It may be a basket rack but it will still get six points. However I wouldn't have a problem with separate restrictions for certain areas.

I think they need to revamp the tagging system to get better info before any drastic measures are taken. There are ways they could get better compliance from people on the tagging. They could easily crack down on processers by making people have a verification number before they except anything. They could also only issues two tags a buck and doe. Then issue more as those are validated. Maybe make a smart phone app for verifying tags instead of a hotline.

I will say a shorter gun season wouldn't hurt my feelings though.

This is all a way to figure out how to sell more tags.

Yes, but they know that more than one deer is killed for every two hunters.

Make it 2 bucks (6pt+), 2 does and make it avail to purchase an extra doe tag at $25+. 5 deer is too much for any single family imo, but would would be a healthy way to regulate the population

Just shorten the gun season and have more bow only. Bows are way better anyways.

Agreed. So many people in louisiana have the mindset that they HAVE to kill every deer they see. Regardless of age and size.

Not to mention the amount of times I've heard someone say they killed a deer on the decline. I get pissed when I hear this. A deer doesn't start to decline until year 7. With a two month rifle season not many deer at all live to 7 years old. Just because you kill a poor genetic deer, doesn't mean it was on the decline.

This topic get my blood boiling. I have been in a lease in WBR parish my whole life and I lease land in Illinois. The different hunting cultures is unbelievable.

I know lots of people that kill 6 deer a year and if you add all the points of the bucks together you'll be lucky to get double digits. They're the exact same ones that bitch and complain about 'to many hunters in the woods" or " we just aren't seeing as many deer as we use to"

Lack of real law enforcement is to blame. Greenjeans don't frick around in those other states.

I went to Colorado deer hunting in the late 80's - on our way back they had a highway roadblock set up for all hunters traveling out of the state, where they searched EVERYTHING you had. Racks of horns, all meat with proof of sex, had to be tagged, and if something was wrong you weren't leaving. In over 40 years of hunting in La., I've not been checked over 5 times. If you get it to the truck, you've got it made.

If people thought they might get caught, and were truly respectful of laws, we'd really have a paradise. As it is, we're the laughing stock.

Oh Hell no, I'll have to fish with the hunters most all year? I'm against it.
