I'm about to retire the mid 80's 50 Merc. It's on a 17'x 48" bateau. Are Tohatsu motors a good option? Maybe I should stick with Mercury, 36 years of service out of this one.

TIA

I've only heard glowing reviews. If I were buying a new 50hp then that's what I would probably run.

My duck boat had a 50 tiller Tohatsu. Motor was bulletproof.

Had a 1990 50 hp Tiller steer Tohatsu that I sold (along with the boat it came on) to my nephew. Thing was still running strong until his son bent the prop shaft.

I would buy one in a heartbeat if I needed one that small.

With Merc, you get an inline 4. 3 cyl for the Tohatsu. I cannot recommend anything, just stating this in case it's important to you.

These smaller engines are an interesting deal because manufacturer changed a lot in this area. For instance, below this, Tohatsu makes the Mercs, and above this, Honda makes the Tohatsu.

I've got an old Tohatsu 25hp, 1996 model. Great little motor with some abuse on it

Supposedly, Tohatsu is the most popular outboard on the world market...Yamaha dominates the US market and Tohatsu doesn't care to aggressively battle them over the market share here

All modern 4 stroke outboards are reliable, it was already said but most motors this size are going to be the same motor with different labels on them. Go off of price, features and availability.

I have a 2020 Tohatsu 40hp. I believe it and the 50s have the same block (I don't know if that is the correct term for it). I love it. I've gotten my 16x48 up to 40 MPH with it. I highly recommend considering a Tohatsu.

I have a 50 Mercury on my 17ft tracker pro. It’s been bullet proof for 4 years. Changed the prop to a 3 blade stainless and will get to 32-33 MPh with 2 people and fishing gear.

I would not hesitate to own a tohatsu outboard. Had a mid 90’s model 50 two stroke for many years and a 115 both ran flawlessly. Commercial crabbers south of Houma pretty much all ran them.

I'm pretty sure Tahotsu makes those Mercs anyway. Aside from that, 25-60 HP Tahotsu engines are some of the best made.

I'm pretty sure its everything 50hp and below. Or maybe everything below 50hp. Pretty sure they make the 40hp.

ETA: I just googled it, and I stand corrected. 30hp and below...

Aren't some of the gearing different though? Maybe I'm wrong? Depending on your use, boat weight, etc. this is something to consider, as you may want more speed or more torque or whatever? I don't think the motors are exactly the same is all, but certainly pretty close that the avg joe may not notice a difference.
