Shooting situation - how would you have handled?

We live out in the country and have no issues with people shooting guns on their property. Yesterday though, we had a situation. Neighbor started skeet shooting and we could hear the pellets coming down on our property in the woods. I sent the dad a text to give him a heads up, no response, kept shooting. Next thing you know, our house, vehicles, pool, etc is getting peppered with pellets.

Leaving out how I handled to see how everyone else would have proceeded from there.

Not really an issue. (depending on how far "the woods" are from you house.)

This is an issue. Give them a second chance with a real phone call and if they don't stop call the law.

This was my initial thought

They have young boys and I made an assumption it was them shooting and didn't want to fire back at kids. If it helps your decision, it was not the kids, or it wasn't the kids alone, they had an adult present.

What Lonnie Utah said. if it's hitting woods near by, no big deal. If it's starting to hit the house, cars, animals then it's an issue.

If i wouldn't have have gotten a reply back then I start peppering back.

I would have called him to verify that my assumption of him intentionally raining pellets on me after I gave him a courtesy call was correct.
Depending on his reply I would probably have called the law because it sounds like he’s a douche and the only place this is gonna go downhill.
A normal decent person who slings a few stray pellets would appreciate the heads up apologize for it.

I don't operate under the assumption that everyone has their phone attached to them 24/7 so I wouldn't jump straight to calling authorities. If they didn't respond to text/call and you are within peppering range it should be easy enough to drive over there and let them know. Assuming of course this is not a repeat incident.

Barring you having any bad interactions with the neighbors before, drive over and talk to them. Use of electronic devices has desensitized most people. When you show up, in person, politely, it does several things:

(1) it personalizes the situation.
(2) it may make a good neighbor.
(3) it shows you are not averse to personally confronting a problem and won’t, at first blush, ask someone to do your work for you.

There are several alternate positions or tactics if these fail, but these ought to be your first steps.

This warrants a phone call and follow up the next time I see them.

If I know them decent enough I would immediately go in person. If not I would definitely call the sheriff.

I'd go drive over and politely axe them to shoot the other way.

Fun fact: in many jurisdictions, munitions traveling across the property line is trespassing.

If you have a good relationship and/or are friendly with them talk to them and ask them to stop. If not or if they refuse to stop just call the sheriff’s office.

I did on our hunting club neighbors a few years ago. I was working on a shooting house one afternoon around this time of year. I heard them shooting but thought nothing of it. They own an 80 acre block and shoot a lot. I took a break to move a feeder in the field. I heard a bullet whistle by me. I ran and got behind my truck. They shot two more times, both times I heard the bullets whistle by. I knew they had been shooting at least one AR and I didn’t want to wait around for 27 more bullets. I jumped in truck and hauled arse, scattering all the tools, bolts, screws, etc. I had laid on my tailgate for 50 yards down the road.

My plan was to go tell them to knock that shite off. When I got there there was a big group of them, some looked rough. all had guns. I called sheriff’s office and went and waited at our gate. They sent two vehicles. Turns out the dumbass neighbors had set up some targets on plastiboard backing up at the crest of a hill and were shooting up hill at them. The bullets were zipping through the targets sailing off into the blue yonder, coming down around me. I am not sure how many times they shot after I left and waiting for cops, but it was a lot. Afterwards when I went back to pick up all my tools I found three bullet holes through of the osb of the shooting house. Bullets were tumbling at about a 45 degree angle.

Long story short sheriff’s deputies documented it all, made them stop and told them not to be shooting up in the air again or towards our property and gave me option of pressing charges. I declined. They have not to my knowledge shot in that direction again. Now they have their targets set up so they shoot across the public dirt road.

If its falling it ain't going to hurt anything. We had a dude about 10 years ago claim his motorcycle was damaged from shot falling from us shooting dove. Police came be and went to see the motorcycle and they came back and told us it was fine....the tank that was damaged apparently was crushed on the side. If you've ever been duck or dove hunting you have had shot fall on you...it weighs nothing and you'd have to be very unfortunate for it to cause any damage. I would have completely ignored it but if it they were shooting a hot dove field I might have gone over and asked if they had a place for one more gun...
