Thinking about buying a shipping container and converting it into a deer camp. Anyone ever done this? Anyone know where to buy one and about how much one would cost?

My father used one as a storage shed when I was younger. Had the door open from top to bottom so that it was also a ramp (to roll the mower in). Definitely can be used like you want but I'd add a few more sports and try to weather proof the top some.

Sorry, not sure where to buy them. Maybe start on Craigslist

I think you’ll need a crane to place it in position.

Those things are expensive as shite. You can get a decent camper already ready to go for cheaper

Search for shipping container homes. The sky is the limit if you’ve got a cutting torch and some basic carpentry skills.

Cost to build out will be about the same as a normal house once you add in all the tools you need. The top also rusts, so you need it under a roof.

There’s a guy in Hammond who has them outfitted as deer camps next to I12

I have a buddy who has a 40' one. He drug it off the trailer with his tractor and used FEL to get it up on some cross ties.

He also built a gable roof over it. Half the gable over container and other half for a small grilling area\porch. Also left enough room for 2 rangers to be parked under it.

He built it so there was a bunk room on each end and a small kitchen and bathroom in the middle. He framed it out with 2" walls and used spray foam. His plumbing is PEX and inside a 6" wall full of foam.

He put a small AC unit in each bedroom and put SunTouch heated floors in it.

Pretty nice place and relatively secure when he is not there.

I have a camper. A nice one that I don’t want to leave in the woods. That and campers are junk and they’re expensive to work on. Not ruling it out, but leaning in other directions. Camper or container will both need roofs built over them.

Pac van in Carencro has some decent used 20' containers for $2500. They are dark green in color.

Civeo, used to be General Marine Leasing in Belle Chasse has a bunch of living quarters that they are looking to get off of their books.

There’s a place in Hammond off the i12 service road that has a bunch for sale. Called AandM containers I think. They’ve got a website.

You can get them off interstate 10 outside of mobile. About 1500 to 2500 I think.

The best way to do this in my opinion to to bury them like they do in Alaska and use the earth as insulation, put on a small A frame roof, stove type heater and ac on top.

Not sure how they are made now but we have one on our farm that my dad bought 25 years ago that the top is still fine with no signs of leaking. Not sure why you would go through the trouble of putting a top on one. Should be good for at least 30 years.
