I have a CVA Scout 35 Whelen and we broke the knob on the cheap Sun Optic scope we had on it...it was like a 12x42 which is way too much magnification and too heavy for that gun anyway. So I'm looking for a value buy to replace it.

Looking to spend less than 250 and we only shoot deer that are max 100 yards out. Very hilly, thick terrain.

What are your suggestions? I've even considered a 1-5x red dot but I dont know how it would handle the recoil.

TIA

Tombstone

Very slightly over your budget but this would be perfect for that gun

Have you checked into the Vortex crossfire line?

I have a crossfire on my CVA optima elite 45-70. I check it once a year and never have to make adjustments

Been a problem with mine since I got it. I have Leupold double strap scope rings and the scope still slides.

I get it sighted in and it's good for another shot, maybe two. Than it's slid back and off target again. Not very confident with it at all.

I've got to figure something out...

I think mine has Warne. It has a heavy Bergara barrel though so I'm sure it helps with it being kinda heavy and absorbing some energy.

Figure no more:

DNZ Game Reaper

These should come standard with the scout, I have them on 3 different break barrels in 35 whelen including a handi-rifle that kicks like a mule on PCP and they’re the only rings I’ve found that will hold.

do yall think a red dot would be better to hold against recoil?

Its more than enough to kill a deer in less than a hundred yard shot on my property

I killed a few earlier this year with a swampfox lpvo on my blackout. I think it's just as good of an option. Maybe better.

45-70 destroyed myNikon. I just switched to Hawke. Vortex is a great option. Buy the best rings you can afford.

If the rifle has irons, are your eyes good enough to use them at the ranges you hunt? It doesnt get any more reliable than that. Slap some glow paint on the front post.

Otherwise, SWFA is major leaps and bounds more durable than anything else in that price range. You should be able to get a fixed 6x for around $200 when they go on sale. There's a 1-4x for sale in the rokslide classifieds now. The fancy reticle and turrets are unnecessary, but you can just ignore all that stuff and shoot it.

I had a leupold rifleman 3-9 on my .35 whelen that has held zero through a couple boxes of bullets. I think it was $200. Leupold recoil tests all their stuff I believe, and that's what I would get if I just had to have a plain ol scope in that budget.

I have a redfield revolution on my 35. I shout 200 gr handloads and it’s held up to that recoil with no issues.

I hate when people suggest something outside of a price range. But this is a really great deal at $300, I just got one myself. Something to consider.

Agreed. I almost pulled the trigger to try it but then I noticed the eye relief. Massive range and very short on the low end. Anybody have one of these? Is it really that bad?

Didn't notice that. 2.5" seems way too short. That can't be right.

I did a little googling, and several people on Rockside say they have one and think the correct number should be 3.5” on the low end. I’m going to find out at that price. Wish they had the German #4 that cheap
