My 6.2 in a 2020 z71 Trail Boss gets 17 every day and 20-21 on a trip, and I get into the pedal. I run regular probably 75% of the time then fell bad and get super. I have never bought premium.
That said, I drove the 3.0 as well and probably would have bought it but there was no comparison to the fun factor of the 6.2 when driven on back to back test drives.

My AT4 has it
It’s fine. But loud as hell at times quiet at others
Mileage isn’t that different I get 22 or so at highway speeds on cruise. Slightly better off cruise. Towing bass boat I’m at like 13-14
Has not started up, leaving me temporarily stranded 4 times in 6 months. Power steering and brakes just randomly quit twice
Some kind of fricking hill descrnt speed bullshite happened last week out of the blue it stopped as quick as it started
Know one guy that his stuck in four low w no explanation.
Other than that, love it
Oh and the carbon pro bed won’t work w toolboxes or bedcovers without a drill.

Looked at this option and the Ram in January when looking for a new truck. Ram went to dual EGR’s and it is getting very hard to get tunes that delete emission equipment for these new engines. With the increase in fuel mileage on the NA gas engines I couldn’t justify the cost plus the risk of a high priced repair on the small diesels. They offer no positives except for fuel mileage which is usually negated by price difference.
I ended up with a ‘21 F150, because like one poster on here said, if you have to make a spreadsheet to justify the cost then you really don’t need a diesel. Now if you just want one, then go for it. There are some videos on the belt driven oil pump in the new F150s, wet belt, Kevlar belt, billet oil pump, so many upgrades. The biggest difference between it and the GM models is that you drop the oil pan in the Ford vs removing the transmission on the GM. And there have been forum reports of the GM belts already failing.

I highly doubt I ever purchase another GM vehicle

I appreciate all the responses here. Exactly what I was looking for. Some positives and negatives to weigh. I guess all I can do at this point is test drive and see what I like. I will say that it's nice that the 3.0L has 460ft-lb of torque for midspeed acceleration. Same as the 6.2. Smaller towing capacity isn't an issue, but I'll definitely have to see about the issues they are currently working out and routine maintenance costs.
Thanks for the input fellas.

I would expect better. 3/4 ton diesels are in the low 20's. I see no reason the Chevy 3.0 shouldn't be in the low 30's once broken in on a normal 2wd configuration
Really? Better? It's 4x4, leveled on 35s. Aside from that, not sure how you wouldn't be pleased with that type of mileage. All homerism aside

I traded my 19 with the 5.3 in and don’t regret it one bit. With the 10 speed it’s super smooth and great mpg. As for highway I’ve gotten up to 30mpg. I tow a 24’ bay boat and avg 15. It’s an impressive engine and truck overall. I just lifted it and added 35s and still average 20-22 hwy and get 12 towing my bay boat.
I would buy it over the 5.3 and 6.2. Def usage isn’t an issue like some say. I don’t mind it. Oil changes at The dealer are 60-70$ like my gas engine was.
For comparison my 5.3 got 15-17 mpg driving normal and 8-10 towing. It had the pos 8 speed transmission that was clunky. They gave me almost what i paid for it on trade so it was a no brainer to upgrade.
I have 7500 miles on it and it’s been awesome!
Same time frame as mine. Same experiences as mine. Love the 3.0. Plus, the DEF I've only had to fill once and that was right before my first oil change. I've got about 8700 miles on it so far and its been a fun truck.

A buddy I work with has one and he has an issue with it burning oil. He checked the dipstick after 1500 miles and it was a quart low. It’s been back to the dealership and they couldn’t figure it out. He switched oil and seems to have fixed the issue.

I have a 2021 AT4 3.0 and love it. About 9,000 miles. No issues so far. Oil change cost about the same as my old truck. DEF refill fell in line with oil change. Good torque, quiet, very smooth shifting truck. I average 25-26 mpg and commute 60 miles a day. There are still a lot of unknowns about this motor as far as how it will fare in the real world over the long run. 100,000 mile powertrain warranty puts my mind at ease at least for the next few years. I chose not to get the carbon pro bed due to issues with camper shells and bed covers fitting. I watched an interview with one of the engineers and he said the oil pump belt maintenance might be pushed back to 200,000 miles due to them seeing few to no failures on their high mileage test engines.

I wonder if the dealer wasn't using the correct DexosD 0W-20 oil? My manual specifically states not to use anything else. When I scheduled my first oil change the dealership didn't even have any in stock. Had to reschedule and wait for them to get some in.

The amount of people that are for and against the smaller diesels is pretty even. I did not suspect this. They are reliable engines and have great MPG. But, their cons cannot be ignored.
It honestly appears that if you want one, get it. If you dont, dont. Each person can make a great case for their position, and be right and wrong.
Now, lets compare braid vs mono.

Went and drove one this weekend...very impressive.
Quiet, powerful, smooth. May very well be my next choice seeing as how my 5.3 is coming up on 90K and I have heard the valve/lifter issues with the AFR tend to start around the 100K mark or so.

Does the cost of the smaller diesel get any cheaper than the regular diesels? That’s one of the things that annoyed the shite out of me when i got off Diesel engines.

Yeah but with 85K on it I worry the damage has been done.
Not to mention if I delete it and the lifters fail I’m probably looking at a 5K valetrain replacement if it doesn’t tear up anything else when/if it shits the bed.
Fixing to have a new boat to tow so don’t feel like havingmy new 70K rig sitting on the side of the road in BFE because some lifter decided it wanted to collapse on the way to/from the lake.
Besides, I’m digging the look of the new High Country package over my LTZ ;)

You are only "sacrificing" it if you need it or use it. For 98% of the truck drivers a towing capacity of 9300 pounds is way more than they will ever need.
You might pull heavy stuff. I pull a pretty heavy double axle trailer from time to time so I need the bigger engine. Most do not.

I have a Z71 with the 5.3 and AFM... 190K miles and still rolling.

I was going to buy a Sierra with the 3.0 last year but the dealership didn’t want to switch out the tires. I loved the way it drove. Ended up with a 5.3 V8 with the 10 speed. I like it. I had a 5.3 previously and had no issues.
