Lookin looking to put up an electric perimeter fence for my lab. Are they all the same? Any brand better than another? Are the wireless ones worth a damn (~$250 compared to $150)? I live on a golf course with no fence. He sleeps in my sun room but I want to let him roam the yard during the day now that he’s older.

Petsafe wireless seems to work pretty well.

He will not stay inside fence and will not come back through after crossing. They only only good if you are in close proximity to the animal and can correct, not a substitute for a real fence.

That might be your experience, but it's not everyone's.

My parents have one and it keeps their dog and mine contained. They don't leave the area. It worked so well that I bought one myself.

Same for me. My lab used to chase after whatever he saw, and wouldn't stop until he was satisfied. Now that I have the wireless fence, once he hears the beep of his collar, he runs back to the house.

We love ours and what I would recommend. Just make sure the battry on the collar doesn't go out.

The wireless only reaches out 125', not 250'. Problem there, I don't know if you can shrink it's range if you yard is smaller then 125' wide or deep. The wire ones work great too! If your dog is fixed those things work great. A male dog will jump thru if he smells love in the wind.

Petsafe Yard Max and buy your wire from Seminole Wire online. Don’t use that dental floss that comes with it. Mine has worked flawlessly on my 2 GSP’s for a 3 acre enclosure for going on 4 years.

just be aware they work if the dog isnt hard headed

my cousin had a beagle and that hard headed SOB learned after a day that if he ran full speed he crossed the barrier fast and only got a momentary shock

then he roamed the whole street all day and to go home, the same thing, he got a running start to cross the barrier

it was funny watching him cross the "no mans land" like he was on a mission to escape impending death or something

labs are "usually" mild mannered and well behaved so im sure he will be ok

in ground fences are crap. get a petsafe wireless fence. I have one for my catahoula and he is as stubborn as that come and still works. With the in ground one the dogs just learns to cross it quick for a slight bump then he is free. With the wireless fence it will shock them for 1 minute until they get back in range. Plus its just a plug it in and you are done no wires to run.

People talk about their pets learning to just run through the “barrier”. A good fence initiates a shock when the dog approaches the fence and then keeps shocking if they cross it is on a timer but it stops if they cross back though the fence. This way they learn they can’t just cross over for a certain distance and the shock stops.

They also have a wireless unit you can put in your house in a particular room you don’t won’t the dog to go into. Just set it behind the door in the room and he will not cross the threshold.

After training, my GSP could be chasing a squirrel across the yard and will slam on the brakes 3 feet from where the wire runs underground. He doesn't even wear the collar much anymore. I've been amazed by how well it works.

I had both. The wires broke in the ground or something because it no longer worked. Pain in the arse to re run wire so...

Got the wireless. I bought an Aussie, sent him to school, alot of money gone for a very smart and pretty dog. He must have figured out the deadzone. Apparently there was a dead area right next to the road that only he knew about.

The neighbor down the road would ride his lab behind his truck up and down the road constantly. My dog would run alongside the truck but stay on our side of the ditch. I would call and he would come run back. One night the guy passed with his dog and ran over my Aussie. I was livid and he knew he killed it because he went around instead of passing back in front of my house.

The signal had to be weak next to that ditch for him to get on the road because he would he never crossed the zone anywhere else.

My brother tried it and the signal wouldnt pass underneath his trailer. I found it hard to believe it wouldnt go through vinyl siding but it didnt. Only the back yard worked so he gave it back. I dont trust those things.

I've had this one for a year with good results. One of the collars went out and sport dog sent me a new one.

My lab/akita mix would not run through until we started putting him in the garage at night to keep the little dog warm. He started running through in the evening to sleep in the garage. Other than that it has been great. I would suggest only walking your dog over the wire in one spot and have it only be on a leash. I started grabbing mine by the collar and doing it and that is what made him start trying it himself.
