Saddle hunting

Really wanting to get into saddle hunting this year and I have everything I think I’ll need in my online cart already. My total for everything is around $700. Is that what it typically costs to get started? I could buy 2 new climbers for that. I haven’t pulled the trigger yet because of the price, even though I know it will help me get into areas that I’ve wanted to hunt but couldn’t find a tree to put a climber in.
Anyway, my cart consists of a tethrd saddle, lineman rope, tether rope, 2 ropeman 1’s, 2 sys bags, a platform and hys strap. After buying some molle clips and material to make an aider I’ll be over $700. I already have climbing sticks. Does that seem about right? A friend of mine that saddle hunts said his gear was a little cheaper, around $500, but the reviews I saw on his saddle weren’t very good and I don’t want to be uncomfortable.

An aluminum climber will last a lifetime, a fabric saddle? not so much. It will have to be replaced, just like a safety harness doesn't last forever and ever. But please if you pull the trigger report back on how you like it. Personally it seems like too many things to keep up with and just nowhere near as comfortable as my Millenium lock on, but I have no experience with a saddle so that's just my opinion.
I have to say I am shocked at how they are surging in popularity. I may try it, but not anytime soon.

My set up was not that much all in, but I have had it for a few years. You Can always do some of the DIY ropes, tethers, bags, and platform to save cash. It sounds like you're purchasing everything from one place. Make some of it yourself if you are concerned about money.

I follow The Hunting Public on youtube, they hunt this way a lot because they are always moving and hiking in public land.
Looks like a young man's game to me, I need a box stand now days
good luck

I have multiple summit climbers. I only hunt public land and have used climbers since I was about 14. They have been effective. A couple of years ago I missed a shot at a big buck while hunting on the ground on what I thought was a doe trail. I go to that spot every year and look for a place to put a climber. There aren’t any trees for one, but I know I could get up in a tree in that area with a saddle.
Also, for people that think they’re unsafe, the gear is essentially the same as they use to rappel off columns in plants. The ropes are rated for around 4,000 pounds. I’ve seen some big dudes bail over a handrail hooked to those ropes well over 100’ up.

Like others have said you can make your own linemans and tether rope and save some money. Also I would suggest only using the ropeman for your linemans belt. It is not at all necessary for the tether. Check this website out. He has tons of materials for everything saddle hunting diy.

That is more or less what I have. Won’t ever go back it’s awesome.

Just going to offer some advice on rope. ATV synthetic winch line is 20 bucks for 50ft on Amazon.
No idea if that helps

I started hunting exclusively from a saddle last year. I sold my climber. I love the versatility and find it more comfortable than both climbers and lock ons. The first time I hunted out of one I actually forgot to take my platform. I ended up just resting my feet on my top climbing stick and ended up shooting a doe at my 6:00. A shot that I would almost certainly not have been able to pull off out of a traditional set was done with relative ease. I was hooked from then on.

I'm pretty sure I could get my hang on into that spot. I have 3 different sets of climbing sticks.
I have no issues with rope safety, I repelled in the Marines and when I lived in Cali (Joshua Tree). I just can't see having my feet on a little bitty platform, and if I relax my legs I'm going to swing into the tree. Plus you are facing the tree. That can have its advantages, but I rather face away from the tree. The old climbers used to face the tree, but now they almost all face away, it's just what the people want.
I want to be convinced, but I can't see it. Some days I spend all day in the tree without getting down. But I can stand straight up on a flat platform, lean back on a seat back, cross my legs, sit on one hip, or the other etc. Just a saddle doubter at the moment.

a lot of folks are using amsteel on their stands/saddle rigs due to weight. i'm trying to figure out how to get them on my muddy pro sticks

My late uncle hunted quail this way, and my cousin hunts squirrels like this. Sounds interesting.

Make sure you don't land on your arrow when you fall.

$700 is way too much.
I made my whole set up last year and I’m in under $250. I took it to the Midwest and killed a buck with it. You don’t need to spend that much.

Been doing it several years now, $700 is really high, especially If you want to get in it with just the essentials.
You have sticks already, you could make your top stick your platform (google this) and save a lot right there. The ropes and maybe even the ropeman 1’s are probably at a premium through tethrd (price that elsewhere and make your own ropes. You don’t have something that could be your tethrd from one of your climbers)?
2 ropemans would be nice but you really only need one.
Finally there are less expensive saddles and bags than tethrd.
Most economical route would be a sitdrag and rock climbing harness.

ETA: I see where you mentioned sticks now.
This will be my third full year in a saddle. I started with a SitDrag for first two years to make sure I liked the idea. There is also plenty of used stuff for sale you can save money on.

I just went ahead and ordered everything in my cart. Along with 5 molle clips to hang steps and my platform on while climbing and I ordered material to make 2 aiders because I refuse to not keep a back up in my bag. I also bought 2 sets of base layers, a Sitka vest, Sitka bibs and a Sitka jacket today. I’m done spending money on hunting for a while
