My RAR is the cheapest centerfire I own, by a fair margin. Even with the price, I was disappointed in the fit and finish the first time
I held it. However, it is the most accurate rifle
I own. Strange how that works sometimes.

Keep it simple. .30-06, .270, or .308

Not enough difference in the 3 to be worth talking about, get whichever one tickles your fancy.

This. I love the idea off off the wall calibers, but it's just Sooo much easier to find the exact ammo you are looking for when you stick with these 3.

Is there an issue with .308 ammo being available atm?

Not that I've seen. Last two trips to Academy they had several boxes.

I've never fired the Ruger but own an Axis and have had others and I really like mine. Savage has a 75.00 rebate going on for the Axis if purchased between Nov 25-30th. LINK Wal Mart has a Stainless Axis II with accutrigger for 296.00 available in 6.5, .308, and 30-06. LINK

I'd get that and throw a Leupold VX Freedom 3-9x50 on it for 249.00 LINK. Spend the rest on a decent base and rings and whatever ammo you can find.

Edited to add evidently the Leupolds are out of stock everywhere and may be discontinued, not sure. But 225.00 after rebate for the stainless Axis with accutrigger it still a great deal.

Wouldn’t be budget if fit n finish were perfect.

I have a ruger American predator in 6.5 grendel. For the money it is a great rifle. Shoots lights out. Only complaint I have is the action.

Yeah, have to accept certain things for a sub-$300 rifle.

Easy to improve though, as I did to mine:

Also, you can pour about a lb of shore 10A modeling silicone into the butt of the stock and really help with the feel and balance. I did that before getting a new stock entirely and made a thread about it.

I forgot that the Axis 2 has the accutrigger.

I would compare the ruger next to the Axis 2 and see which feels better.

I like oddball shite as much or more as anyone else, but there's no practical reason for it. If you're a one gun man it makes zero sense.

As much as I hate to say it, I think the 6.5 creedmoor has entered the realm of "popular enough to buy anywhere" with those three.

For whitetails only, on paper its a better choice than the 3 golden standards.

So many good whitetail rounds out there, but I got a thing for the 6.5s

I've been killing them with a 6.5x55 my whole life. It really is the perfect deer caliber. Its fast enough to shoot flat enough but not so fast that the bullets come apart.

I've only had 1 ever not exit, and it was a 139gr PPU soft point that went nearly coast to coast and stopped under the hide. The 6.5's are wonderful deer killers

Damn thats cheap

Sooooo many good cheap options these days. I cant remember the last time I shot a new rifle that was inaccurate. I guess it was a marlin .44 mag around 2005. They all shoot so good these days

Yep I agree. I have 2 grendels, a 26 nosler, and about to buy a 6.5 prc. My nephew shoots a .260 rem.

Both will kill deer no problem, but you will likely want more in the future. Wait for Black Friday and see if you can pick up a tikka t3x for around 500 on sale. Or find one used. Wonderful action and trigger. Tons of upgrades down the road. And I’ve never met a tikka that didn’t shoot lights out.

Ruger American vs Savage Axis

I've been looking at the same thing. I've heard savage guns with a name like "Axis" aren't as good as those with a number like the model 110. Idk how true that is. But I've also seen video reviews that were really good for the Ruger American and its on sale black friday at bass pro for 399. Think that might be my pick. Looking at the .308 as mentioned.

Boyd laminate, little bit of sanding and it fit great. Wanted it to match my Ruger Gunsite Scout...
