Anyone have any experience with either of these rifles? Looking at 30-06 for deer hunting/overall effective round, but this is my first true hunting rifle, and I'm up in the air on either of these. New and used options available with or without scopes, but current budget (not including optic) is a little under $500 if possible.

Ruger would be my choice.

Both are fine.

.308 would be choice if available.

Find a vortex scope. Good scope. Great price point.

Fire away.

Sweet, thanks. Is there an issue with .308 ammo being available atm? I just figured 30-06 would be more readily available, but I've really only done research on .270, 30-06 and 300winmag

Either one would be fine.

I'll throw in a wildcard suggestion. CVA scout 2 in .35 whelen. They're cheap, shoot great, primitive season legal ( 2 extra weeks to hunt), and plenty enough gun for deer and even elk to out as far as you can hit them.

For a one-gun louisiana guy, its the best deal going IMO

I vote Ruger. I have the 300blk predator or ranch I can’t remember. It’s a cool accurate little gun for the price. I did have an issue with the rotary magazine but it sorted itself out. You can buy them with magpul mags I believe.

Also, don't stress too much about the caliber. Keep it simple. .30-06, .270, or .308

Not enough difference in the 3 to be worth talking about, get whichever one tickles your fancy.

I've got a Savage Axis in .22-250, it's an unreal accurate rifle. I put a Leupold scope on it and have less than 600 bucks in the whole rig. I really like that rifle.

I have a American in 3006. I like it a lot and it shoots very well. Only thing I am doing is changing out the trigger. The one it comes with isn't horrible but I am use to very light crisp triggers. I am going to put in a 1.5 timey.

Can’t speak for the Ruger, but I bought a Savage Axis in 6.5CM a few weekends ago. Took it out for the first time last weekend and dropped a deer in it’s tracks at 150 yards. I’m very pleased. Including a $40 box of ammo it was $360 out the door. I will definitely upgrade the scope soon but I’m satisfied for the price point.

Had a savage youth model for my son. Couldn't get it to group. Sold it and got the ruger and love it. Nephew has a savage with no problems though.

I have a Ruger American Predator in .308 and it is a great gun.

Between that and the Savage I'd choose the Ruger as the trigger is much better in the Ruger. The Savage trigger isn't good.

Own both brands. Savage in 7mm-08, 243, 6.5CM and the Ruger in 6.5CM, 308, 300blk. I usually decide by the scope I have on the gun to which one I'll shoot that day. Like them all and all shoot great.

Savage Is very accurate out of the box imo.

But both are very good at their price, you'll be happy with either.

Never handled the Ruger but I got one of the Savage Axis on sale at Walmart awhile back in 6.5 CM and I put one of these MCARBO trigger kits on it and it feels really great.

I bought the Savage Axis .308 from Academy for about $340 a month ago. Came with a scope.

Haven’t had a chance to shoot it yet so I guess I have nothing else to say about it

I agree. They’ll all kill whatever you need to kill and the ballistics differences would only show up at the range when you’re shooting long distance.

Academy had 308 and 6.5CM when I was shopping. I chose the .308 bc I thought ammo would be cheaper and more plentiful. Hasn’t really been the case. 308 is not cheap these days. None of it is.

I was in the same boat a few weeks ago. When I asked the guy he said ammo prices would be about the same and it’s all high and hard to find right now. I went with the 6.5CM just to see if it lives up to the hype it’s getting.

That's a rare thing. Every Savage rifle that I have is super accurate. It happens though, I have a Tikka in 6.5 CM that has not grouped the way I would like.
