Looking for opinions. This will be in 308. I will likely throw on a VX-3i 2-8 or 3-10

Appreciate any input.

Why not a 270 or 3006?

I’ve toyed with the idea of a 30-06

Well, the stock on the River American pretty much sucks. As soon as it was available I ordered a Magpul American Hunter and put on it.

Love it. Mine has an 18” barrel (it’s the Predator) and it’s very accurate.

It’s really just a toss up between those two honestly.

ETA: in the south a .30-06 or .270 offer no real advantage over the .308.

Flip a coin.

Have you ever looked at a Thompson Center Compass?

I just bought the Ruger American Predator in 6.5. Trying to get ammo and a scope. Got it at Academy and it was the display so it had a few scuffs, they gave me 10% off. I plan to cerakote it and eventually replace the stock.

I didn't like the action on the Compass. Felt clunky.

Unfortunately I didn't try out the Savage Axis, probably should've, oh well.

I have a RA in 3006, for the price it is great.

Can't comment on the axis but I will say whatever you go with make it a 270 or 3006.

I have the savage axis II in 30-06 with a vortex 3-9-50. I had a muzzle break added to help with the kick. My go to set up under 200 yds. I have other options but i keep grabbing the savage.

Have you held both of them? I’d get my hands of them first before I bought one. I was deciding between these two and the Mossberg Patriot in .270. The Mossberg felt better in my hands and that’s what I went with and it has been an excellent choice for myself.

My son has a Mossberg patriot predator in 6.5 CM.
It’s very accurate and has little to no recoil. I like it better than the axis that my daughter uses.

RAR Predator with the AI mag is just impossible to beat in that price range.

Ahh the downvoters who can only justify it because oh it's a shorter action and lighter gun.

The 270 and 3006 are both better than the 308 for different reasons, get over it.

And what are those reasons for deer hunting in the south? Tell us why either are better over really any cartridge.

Also, how many .270 or .30-06 have you ever heard of being used in any type of long range shooting competition?

Both are fine guns so that It's a coin flip. I'd get whichever handles the best and has the most natural safety/bolt throw for YOU.

And one more thing, I’m not knocking either of those calibers. They’re both great cartridges that have an amazing history.

I am arguing that basically any modern centerfire cartridge being produced today (well, anything >.22 and some of those would be fine for most) with a decent bullet will easily take any animal that one would hunt in the south (excluding AR or TN elk)

I like my 308 Axis.

Finding cheap ammo is the hard part.
