My cousin has a little 15hp Johnson thats probably 40 years old. It still runs just fine. Hes changed some fuel lines and other typical maintenance items, but its as solid as they come.

1998 Johnson 40 on the back of my Duracraft stick steer boat. Every 3-4 years I put a pump in it and clean the fuel system. I guess I'll never get rid of it, just runs too good.

The fict was definitely a piece of shite and the etec is an evinrude in name only. It's a shame in general that 2 strokes (particularly the optimax) have gone away totally. The optimax was a great option for people who wanted to go fast, needed a light motor, or could deal with some noise to save some money. The end of the optimax was a horrible day in the world of recreational boating.

Eta: and it was cleaner running than any 4 stroke out there

I had a 130 on my first boat many moons ago, even as 15yr old knucklehead I couldn't kill it. They had most of the kinks worked out of the G2's, my son was actually in the process of buying a Blazer Bay with a 300G2 on it today when this news broke. I think he is going to pass on it now, worried the re-sell will be in crapper when he went to flip it next spring. I can see warranty claims being an issue in the future, not like they'll be worried about pissing off future customers.

My dad bought a Johnson 9.9 brand new in 76’ and proceeded to run the everliving shite out of it on shallow rivers for the next 20 years. There’s no tell-tale, it just sends cooling water to the exhaust and has a small hole drilled in midsection where you can half arse tell if the water pump is working by whether it’s coughing hot water or not.

I overhauled it for him a few years back, and the impeller was gone, chunks of black rubber stuck to the exhaust screens, sand in every nook and cranny. No telling how long he had run it basically just siphoning water through it. New impeller, plug, and carb cleaning and it ran like a top.

I guess it was really over when they went broke and sold, but I’ll still drink one for OMC tonight.

Resell on etech was shite to start with. They couldnt have had 10% of the rec market share with the etech. When merc and yamaha started buying spots on transoms evinrude was getting sold to a jetski company and BRP got all the name was worth. They're keeping the trademark because it isnt worth anything anymore. Crying damn shame. Techs wont be trained, parts wont be stocked, warranty wont be honored. Feel like somebody pissed in my boots and asked me to pay them for it.

It was really over when the Canadian jet ski company signed on the dotted line, but it still sucks to know that OMC branded outboards are no more. Little bit of nostalgia in me was hoping the Johnson brand could make a comeback one day.

Yep. If the etech didnt cost and weigh more than comparable 4 strokes they would have had something. The optimax was the pinnacle of 2 stroke tech balanced with simplicity.

BRP went with the GE business model. Buy em, rape and pillage them for all theyll get you, throw them aside and move on.

So eff the dealers who are gonna be stuck with inventory then huh? I feel for em. Gonna be tough to sell somebody a motor that won’t be produced anymore

My Dad bought a brand new 6 horse Evinrude "Fisherman" in 1968. It's at my mother's house now and she's 96. We went all over with that little motor. Lots of memories. Still runs, too.

I have a three year old Etec, I really like it it is lighter than the 4 strokes, better hole shot by a mile and "knocking on wood..." has run like a top as long as I have had it. It's a shame they are done, one of my buying points was at the time they offered me a 7 year factory warranty, that option isn't looking so hot right now...

You couldn’t figure out why Rude had twice/thrice the warranty of the other mfgs??
Might want to take a couple months off to learn how to service your motor before the dealers lose their techs. Know a couple guides with them and have heard zero complaints but I’m sure that will change now.

Mine is 7 years old now but only has about 150 hours and 100 of them were put on it last year. It's a badass rig, unfortunately 10 years from now there will be no factory trained techs left.

with the new Etec you have to run that special oil. I wonder if that will be hard to come buy at some point.

My dad and I run a 250 etec that we bought from my brother last year, who bought a new Etec G2
