When I first started public land hunting with family back in the 90s my cousin would run trail timers. I was a youngun and thought it was some sort of alien technology. My cousin would set them high and claim that only bucks with big racks would trip them and does would walk right under. My mind was blown.

What blows my mind now is that we have gone from booby trap timers to cameras that send a photo to a device in our pockets.

The ever quickening of technology being adapted/developed for hunting worries me for the future of the sport.

For example the scopes and bow sites now that automatically take range and elevation into affect so any joeblow can kill something at 1000 yds. should be banned.

Really? Do you honestly think just because a scope can factor in range and elevation that just anyone can shoot 1,000 yards? Not just anyone can shoot at 500 yards much less 1,000 yards. If you don’t have a gun custom built for that type of range you wont even be able to hold your scope on paper because of your heart beat.

If you are spending the money on that scope you also have a gun to match. No body is spending 3-4k on a scope and putting it on a Walmart special.

It takes the sportsmanship out of hunting imo.

Less hunters then ever right now probably keeps it balanced.

I was shocked at how easy shooting 600 yds was at an F-class match last month.

My ammo was crap (huge s/ds) and still shot 558.

Have another match in the morning. My ammo is good so hope to do much better.

Also, my 14yr old son had a 5 shot 5" group at 600yds.

That was with my rifle which has a Vortex razor 4.5-27 on it but we also easily shot my AR in 6.5 with a leupold 3-15x44 and easily hit our targets.

I am sure there were old timers that said the same thing about the modern rifle that you use. As long as the population of the herds are managed appropriately what's the problem?

For a short time I shot F-SL with some guys I worked for. Opened sights, 223, 200-600 yds. in 3 positions. Takes a lot of trigger time dry firing at specks on the wall to get good.

Yes I remember them I wanted some bad but couldn’t get my money together, and yes had some buddies that swore if you placed the string at the right height it would only get tripped by deer not coyotes or dogs. Then the 35mm game cameras came out and everyone would have to wait for film to be developed!!

No i did not but there are people who think that is all they have to do had a buddy tell me that a laser finding Burris he could shoot a five gallon bucket at 600yds and that’s all he had to do and would make those shots. People shooting LR in a match or at steel is way different than a deer.

Out west in particular part of the hunt is being able to get/stalk into rifle range and then being able to make the adjustments needed to account for range/evaluation. It takes practice, knowledge etc.

Riding around in the truck and walking the needed distance from the road to take 1000+ yds. shots with your Gunwerks topped with a self adjusting scope just doesn't seem much like hunting. To each there own I guess.

About the same as shooting at half tame high fence operations.

Keep your shirts on high fencers, I know not all are created equally.

Bro, does your custom rifle stop your heart. JFC.

Cameras everywhere worry me, including in the woods. I scan the area before taking a leak anymore. 1984 is amongst us.

If there's a high fence, you're shooting livestock. Call a turd a turd.

Dangit I didn't realize trail timers would spark this much controversy lol

THIS. I'm always half expecting my BIL to send me a pic of myself taking a shite in the woods.

I tend to agree however I will admit there is a difference between a 100 acre HF and 10k acre HF. Trying to keep MM from getting his draws in a wad.

Yeah there are degrees to it but you're not hunting a wild animal either way.
