I hear that. My truck is paid off and no note is nice.
You still getting the use out of it and doing a lot of towing?

I ordered a new Chevrolet 1962 Impala 2 door hard top sport coupe with all of the bells and whistles including the big v-8, three on the tree and overdrive. It cost me $3,100 when I could have bought a C10 pickup for under $1,800. Then pickups began to become a fad of the city guy who had to have a "TRUCK" and prices took off for the sky.

Not enough towing to justify it but plenty enough miles. Knocking on 30k already
The rate I'm going ill have 250k on it by the time its paid off. Buying it was pretty dumb. Other than the one trip out west every year a gasser would be fine. Its totally worth it while cannonballing 10k pounds 75mph for 22 hours straight though

Another reason trucks - and SUVs - became more popular is that cars became smaller and more economical, less able to carry passengers, cargo or tow more than 2000lbs.
So people - and magazines - wanted trucks to become more comfortable and livable like their cars used to be.... and here we are.

If you want to criticize he office/suburb crowd, prove why you need any of the shite you buy.
We just found the guy who lives in an apartment and has a v8 crew cab for getting groceries and running errands and crawls over pot holes or speed bumps so they don't do any damage.

In 2000 my parents gave me a single cab F-150 standard. V-6,Vinyl floors and old fashioned roll up windows. I loved that truck, had 150k miles on it before I traded it in. Found a bunch of pictures and the invoice in my senior year crap my parents offloaded on me.
It was $14,500. Out the door.

I remember a truck commercial from the 80s for a Dodge Dakota saying
Fifty-niiiine Ninety-fiiiiive

That was cheap, even for then. My first truck was a 95 Ranger extra cab. The only upgrades were the cab and I had the 3.0 V6. 5 speed, manual windows, etc and it was just a little cheaper than that, and that was 5 years earlier. Sold that truck in 2005 with about 130k on it for $5k, so $1k/year plus maintenance, which was just a couple of O2 sensors in addition to the normal scheduled stuff.
I've got a real truck now. A Ridgeline.

My first truck was a 69 Chevy with a straight six 200 that I paid $500 for in 1982.
My current truck is a 2010 F-150 SVT Raptor that I bought in 2015 for $23,000. Currently have 240,000 miles on it.
No comparison between what these two trucks will do but I would love to have the 69 Chevy today.

No doubt, but I suspect if you compared truck prices to other indices, including car prices, you'll find that the prices have risen faster than a lot of other durable goods. I could be wrong but I don't remember trucks being the more expensive options on the lots in the 80s.
Factoring in inflation and keeping equipment as comparable as possible, new trucks are actually cheaper than their old counterparts. People get pissy and downvote this fact though.

I had that same truck. A 99 RT with a whole bunch of engine mods. I put new roller rockers, cam, throttle body, PCM, 4:11 gears and more.
Was a BEAST to drive.
Good times!

I have no doubt a lot of the price increase is due to trucks exploding with features as more people use them for daily drivers and wanted them more like cars on the inside. That doesn't change the truth of what I said, though. In the 80s they weren't the most expensive segment on the car lots, and they frequently are now.

First truck was a 4 banger single cab 1994 ranger for about $7000. Drove it till I got a mustang then my FAs used it for a work truck until it was scrap
My next truck was a 2002 F150 XLT with all the bells and whistles for $27,900 after TT&L plus financing. Drive it till 2019 when it caught on fire with 265,000 miles
My truck now is a 2019 ram 1500 bighorn 4x4 with everything but heated seats got it for $27,000 with 25,000 miles on the odometer
